Try to grasp the fact – a very hard thing to do – that in the spiritual life ‘feelings’ count for nothing, that they are no indication of our real state; generally speaking they are just the opposite. . . You are perfectly right when you say that the first thing to do is ‘to give up your own will.

Why not aim at making God’s will alone yours in every detail of life, so that you would never desire or wish for anything except what He willed, and look on every detail as coming from His hand, as it does? Such a one is never ‘put out’ by anything — bad weather, unpleasant work, annoying incidents, they are all His doing and His sweet will. Try it, though it means high perfection.

It’s time to say no to C-I-N-O Catholicism, says Fr Alan in today’s homily (Jun 28, memorial of St. Irenaeus, Bishop and Martyr). Today’s Gospel implies that Our Lord will not be satisfied with some who profess to be Catholic or Christian, but are so “in-name-only.” We all have to defend the Faith within our self and within society, by having the courage to denounce sin, heresy, and hypocrisy, both privately and publicly.

On the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Aug 15), Fr. Maximilian explains that if we follow Mary’s example and imitate her virtues, we have reason to hope to join her in the next life, who was first to join Jesus in the Resurrection.

Immaculately conceived, and assumed body and soul into heavenly glory, Mary always lived in intimate union with the will of God. Beginning in this earthly life by imitating her, we can achieve eternal glory with her in the next.

In the homily for Election Day (Nov 06, Tuesday in the 31st Week in Ordinary Time), Fr. Alan reminds us that we have a responsibility to vote faithfully, in the light of Catholic principles. This duty relates to today’s Gospel in that we can choose to correspond with God’s grace, or we can decline. In any case, our choices will be measured against the Divine Will. Nothing compares to the offer God the Father makes us, but unlike the offer of “the Godfather” in the movies, God the Father’s is an offer we CAN (but shouldn’t) refuse.

In the parable of those invited to the banquet who decline to come when called, we have a warning of the danger of not corresponding with God’s grace, of preferring our own will to His: “none of those men … will taste My dinner.”

In the homily for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (Jan 01), Fr. Alan explains some of the Catholic belief about the divine maternity: the Son of God regards Mary as His Mother. She is the “full of grace,” chosen from before the time began, to be the one through whom God would unite Himself to humanity. Just as her humble fidelity recommended her to God in the fullness of time, to choose her as His Mother, so her humble fidelity is the condition by which Peace was once and will again be granted to us.

In the homily for the memorial of St. Agatha (Virgin and Martyr, Feb 05), Fr. Matthias explains how the virtue of chastity combined with the self-sacrificial love of martyrdom, as exemplified by St. Agatha, is what the Church needs today. Deflecting attention from the problem of unchastity and blaming the present crisis on “clericalism” may very well be itself an expression of clericalism. The crisis will go unresolved until the root cause is acknowledged: lack of virtue, particularly the virtues of chastity and fortitude.
