In the homily for the memorial of Pope St. Pius X (Aug 21), Fr. Matthias explains that Catholic theology admits of doctrinal development but rejects the idea of “evolution” of dogmas that would allow contradiction of established doctrine. Pope St. Pius X reminded us that dogmas cannot change content or meaning with time, and strenuously opposed the theory of the “evolution” of dogmas. Where there is contradiction between a theological opinion and an established dogma, there is no continuity, no development, no greater understanding of Catholic doctrine. There is simply mutual exclusion: both teachings cannot be true.

Catholics should be discerning enough to recognize and reject risky theological opinions which claim to develop dogma, but actually, contradict already-established doctrine in meaning and content.

Ave Maria!

Mass: St. Pius X – Mem

In the homily for the memorial of St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr (Jan 21), Fr. Alan explains how the death of the virgin Agnes, described by St. Ambrose as “one victim, but a twin martyrdom, to modesty and to religion,” illustrates the Christian vocation to bear witness to God, by example and by confession. Agnes’ heroic fidelity constitutes the highest charity toward God and neighbor.

On the memorial of St. Mariana of Jesus de Paredes (Franciscan Tertiary, Virgin; May 28, 2019), Fr. Alan relates the evidence of the life of the saints to today’s Gospel in which Jesus foretells the coming of the Holy Spirit. If we want to follow Jesus, we must be convicted by the Holy Spirit.

The present purification of the Church is another sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit of “Christ with us.”

Fr John Lawrence gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Jan 10, 2024, on the readings of the day, highlighting the importance of prayer and obedience in the Christian life, drawing lessons from Jesus’ healing acts and Samuel’s response to God’s call.

Father’s homily reflects on Jesus’ healing of Peter’s mother-in-law and the significance of prayer and obedience in Christian life. He highlights Jesus’ respect for the Sabbath and His compassionate response to those in need. The homily emphasizes the importance of seeking solitary prayer, as Jesus did, to connect with God without distractions. He draws parallels with Samuel’s story, where Samuel’s response to God’s call, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening,” serves as a model for our prayer life and obedience. The homily concludes by urging us to emulate the examples of Jesus and Samuel in listening to God and following His will.

Ave Maria!

In this 3rd talk on the Beauty and Wisdom of Vatican II, Deacon Ed Walker explores Dei Verbum, emphasizing the Catholic Church’s understanding of divine revelation through scripture and tradition, guided by the Magisterium.

He delves into Dei Verbum, a pivotal document from the Second Vatican Council, promulgated on November 18, 1965, which articulates the Catholic Church’s understanding of divine revelation (DV 1). He explains that God reveals Himself through sacred scripture and sacred tradition, which together form a single deposit of faith entrusted to the Church (DV 10). This revelation, culminating in Jesus Christ as the mediator and fullness of all revelation, invites humanity into a living relationship with Him (DV 2). Dcn. Ed emphasizes the Magisterium’s role, noting, “The Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, but is its servant” (DV 10), ensuring faithful interpretation across generations. He discusses the document’s encouragement of historical-critical methods for interpreting scripture, which must consider the context and unity of the Bible, as well as the Church’s tradition (DV 12). This approach has led to renewed biblical scholarship and increased Bible studies, such as those from the Augustinian Institute. He also addresses the Old Testament’s role in preparing for Christ and the New Testament’s preeminence, especially the Gospels (DV 17-18). He highlights St. Jerome’s quote, “Ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ,” underscoring the call for Catholics to engage deeply with scripture (DV 25). Additionally, he touches on practical concerns, like participating in non-Catholic Bible studies, advising that a well-catechized Catholic can engage fruitfully but must be cautious of differing interpretations (CCC 112). Dei Verbum has enriched liturgical life by expanding Old Testament readings and fostering ecumenical dialogue (DV 22).
