Ave Maria Meditations

Just now you are the victim of one of the most dangerous temptations that can assail a well-intentioned soul: the temptation of discouragement. I adjure you to offer every resistance in your power.

Again, God permits our everyday faults only to humiliate us!  If you can profit by them and yet remain trusting and at peace, you will be in a better state than you would if you committed no obvious fault and so flattered your self-love greatly, leaving you in grave danger of self-complacency. Actually you can very easily make use of all your faults to become one degree more humble and to dig still more deeply within yourself the one foundation of all true holiness.

Ought we not to admire and bless the infinite goodness of God who can thus derive our greatest good from our very faults? All we need do is to have no love for them, and humble ourselves gently because of them; after each of our falls to pick ourselves up with tireless persistency, and to go to work peacefully to correct them.

Subject yourself to God’s will in the work you do, but do not be too eager and restless. Do honestly what you believe you ought to do, and rely on Providence for success, knowing neither care nor anxiety and thus possessing as far as possible a tranquil heart and unshackled mind. Be faithful in this practice and you shall dwell in peace even in the midst of perplexity; while the involuntary troubles you may encounter will serve to increase the merit of the fundamental compliance of your will with God’s.

In the homily for Wednesday of the Third Week of Easter (May 08, 2019) Fr. Matthias explains how Jesus, the Bread of Life, reveals the Eucharistic mystery of our relationship with him, through the gift of the Father. Everyone is welcome in the Church, not because of our merit, but because God has been so good as to include us in His life.

Jesus wants us to accept membership into His family in a particular way: through filial devotion to His Mother and ours, the Blessed Virgin Mary. We therefore have reason to approach the Lord with humility, gratitude, and confidence.

Ave Maria!

On the memorial of St. Martin of Tours (Nov 11, 2019, also Veterans Day), Fr. Josemaria expounds on today’s Gospel and Our Lord’s exhortation to “Be on your guard!” (Lk 17:3). The key to not only spiritual survival but to personal and social renewal is for good people to overcome evil by actively doing good works.

The principle of solidarity that links all human beings one to another is the reason our individual good works benefit all of society. To aid and abet those who would spread evil by their wicked deeds, we need only sit back and do nothing. To “overcome evil with good” (Rom 12:21), we must do the good!

To read about the concept of solidarity, see Pope St. John Paul II’s apostolic exhortation “RECONCILIATION AND PENANCE” (Reconciliatio et Paenitentia) para. 16, heading:  “Personal Sin and Social Sin” (http://w2.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/apost_exhortations/documents/hf_jp-ii_exh_02121984_reconciliatio-et-paenitentia.html

Ave Maria!

Fr. Vincent Lampert gives his fourth talk of five at our conference on exorcism in January 2020 on the need for exorcists in the Church where he describes the fourfold attack that Satan launches at us and how the Blessed Virgin Mary provides unparalleled intersession to defend us.

These talks are part of a conference by Fr. Vincent Lampert, the exorcist for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, held at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center on January 17-19, 2020, on “The Need for Exorcists” in our world that is seeing an increase in demonic activity as our culture becomes less Christian. He explains the role of exorcists in our modern Church and world, how the Church discerns between natural and preternatural activity, how lay people are involved in this battle and how they can protect themselves and help others, how the Virgin Mary helps in this battle and the joy we should have, knowing that Christ has already conquered.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Apr 12, 2021, on how our relationship with God is dependent on Prayer, keying off the first reading from Acts on how the apostles and disciple raised their voice in one accord and then refers to many other saints and doctors of the church. This will become the source of all holiness and good works in our lives as we develop a friendship with God that can continue to grow if we persevere with prayer.

Ave Maria Meditations

So, go forth very bravely with perfect trust in the goodness of Him who calls you to some holy task. When has anyone ever hoped in the Lord and been disappointed? Mistrust of your own powers is good as long as it is the groundwork of confidence in God’s power; but if you are ever in any way discouraged, anxious, sad, or melancholy, treat this way as the temptation of temptations.

Never allow your spirit to argue or reply in any way to any anxiety or down-heartedness to which you may feel inclined…This, in a few words, is a complete summary of what you most need: never under any pretext whatsoever do you give into the temptation of discouragement not even on the plausible pretext of humility.

Saint Frances de Sales
