Conferences #96 – Fr. Peter Fehlner at Washington Theological Union ( 57min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

In this 3rd talk of the Newman-Scotus Symposium presented by the Conventual Franciscans at the Washington Theological Union on Oct 22-24, 2010, Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner gives a talk titled “Scotus and Newman in Dialogue – Scotus Metaphysician – Newman Phenomenologist.” He  points out that Newman agreed and even specifically refers to Scotus’ opinion of the motive for the incarnation, that is, the Franciscan Thesis, the Absolute Primacy of Christ, that Christ would have come even if Adam had not sinned. And in regard to the Immaculate Conception, which Scotus was so prominent in giving a theological basis, is key to understanding the difference between Protestants and Catholics and why Catholics are orthodox. Also, both Scotus and Newman have been accused by Harold Weatherby of being the seeds of later heresy and in the same way as Hegel was. Fr. Peter argues, as many others are doing, that Scotus and Newman are in fact the antidote to the Modern errors of Hegel. Fr. Peter is saying that Weatherby correctly sees the affinity between Scotus and Newman but misinterprets the common teaching of both and points out how.

Prominent in his talk is the stages of intellectual  process that are common between Scotus and Newman which gets short circuited by modernism.  And the element of internalizing of the process, how the heart factors into the intellectual process.

The critical question of how we achieve certainty is determined by both the object and so derives the certainty but also a personal note that involves the will which is not (as both rationalists and pietists insist) radically opposed to the intellect and reason.

Affectio Justitio of Scotus is also akin to the benevolence Newman derived from the idea that God loves himself both because it is reasonable and also most appealing and this is how we are able to love others as ourselves as our intellect becomes sanctified and so begins to function more like God’s.

Fr. Peter also refers to Carl Balic, who was the foremost scholar of Scotus in his day and who wrote the first draft of the eighth chapter of Lumen Gentium on the Virgin Mary. Balic suggested the affinity of Scotus and Newman to Fr. Peter and thought this would be a great way for modern men to understand Scotus better. Here Fr. Peter brings this suggestion to full fruition.

December 17, 2010. The Vatican has accused China of oppressing religious freedom and says that attempts to control the conscience of its citizens and interfere in the internal affairs of the Catholic Church does no credit to Beijing. In a strongly worded statement, the Vatican said their attitude is a sign of fear, weakness and intransigent intolerance. The report also states that Beijing has “unilaterally damaged the climate of trust and dialogue” that had developed between the Vatican and the government.

Ave Maria!  I hope you enjoy this article from The Arab Weekly about how the king of Jordan is seeking greater peace and harmony between Christians and Muslims in his country and worldwide.  The Muslims have joined us this year, in Jordan, in celebrating the Feast of the Annunciation.  The Catholic Church organized the event, and numerous Jordanian Muslim dignitaries and public officials attended it.

In a call for peace, love and harmony among religions, known as the Amman Message, Muslims and Christians came together to celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation in Jordan.

Organised by the Catholic Centre for Studies and Media (CCSM), under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Prime Ministry Affairs Jamal Sarayreh, the March 25 event was hailed as a symbol of tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

“This is the first event that joins Muslims and Christians together in celebration of the Feast of the Annunciation. It aims at reasserting the deep values of the brotherly relations between Muslims and Christians in Jordan, a country of peace and understanding,” said CCSM Director Father Rif’at Bader.

“The event represents a continuation of the Amman Message, the Common Word Initiative and the World Interfaith Harmony Week. It sends a clear message to the world that religion, with its values of love, can really contribute to peacemaking and stability, as well as to the restoration of cohesion and harmony.”

The Amman Message was released by Jordanian King Abdullah II in 2004 focusing on what “Islam is and what it is not” and “what actions represent Islam and what actions do not.” King Abdullah said its goal was to “clarify to the modern world the true nature of Islam and the nature of true Islam.”

The Solemnity of the Annunciation is generally celebrated by Christians on March 25. The feast marks the Archangel Gabriel telling the Virgin Mary that she would be the mother of Jesus. The feast has been celebrated since the fifth century.

The Amman celebration this year was attended by government officials, ambassadors, members of parliament, representatives from the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, the Chief Islamic Justice Department, the Iftaa Department and churches in Jordan.

Sarayreh stressed unity among Jordanians of all faiths saying: “Since its establishment, Jordan has built a country based on the values of humanity that we all share.”

In the homily for the memorial of Franciscan martyrs Blesseds Agathangelus and Cassian (Aug 07), Fr. Matthias explains that dialogue in the Church shouldn’t be just a euphemism for dissent from decisions of legitimate authority; rather, it is a right and duty of the faithful to help their pastors pursue the common good of the flock (Canon 212 of the Church code of law). Today’s Franciscan Saints give a good example of this virtue.

In the homily for the memorial of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (Abbot and Doctor of the Church, Aug 20) Fr. Alan explains that the Church, once again mired in sexual abuse allegations, needs saints to overcome this crisis. Public relations consultants and lawyers will not help the hierarchy bring about the needed reform; only holy ministers, consecrated religious, and laity can do this.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Apr 12, 2021, on how our relationship with God is dependent on Prayer, keying off the first reading from Acts on how the apostles and disciple raised their voice in one accord and then refers to many other saints and doctors of the church. This will become the source of all holiness and good works in our lives as we develop a friendship with God that can continue to grow if we persevere with prayer.
