Ave Maria Mediations:

In Anticipation of our Christmas Communion

The Lord has shown his great mercy. Enkindle in your hearts ardent desires and burning wishes for Our Lord to come to you in the virtue of his charity, love of the Father, and of every human being. Say with the Royal Prophet, “I opened my mouth and panted.” And your Savior will respond, “Surely I come quickly; you shall see me very soon.”

Your eyes at the midnight Mass will gaze upon the elevated Host and your lips will utter, “My Lord and my God.” A few minutes more and the little Infant will have come to you. His Immaculate Mother did not hold him more truly in her arms that first Christmas midnight than you will have him, heart to heart. Then all the love of that Infant Redeemer will be poured out upon you. It’s a thirst of the heart of every creature that desires to be loved, and the love which can alone satisfy that craving is the Divine Love.

Let your heart delight in the love your God has for you, personally, individually. No soul ever in ardent fervor desires to unite herself to our Lord in Holy Communion, as our Lord desires to unite himself to her. So Holy Communion is a delight to your Infant Savior; because he loves you, oh, how immeasurably! He tells you in his heart to heart interview that he has become a little Infant so that you may love him with a human love without fear. He wants you to confide in him, approach to him with a conviction that his Great Majesty is annihilated that you may no longer see in him but a little Child, with a body and soul just as you have. And the mystery of love is this: that he unites his Body to your body and your soul to his Soul, so that yours may be a member of his very own.

This Christmas Holy Communion will unite you to our Lord, it is my prayer, more intimately than ever before in all your lives so that even the smallest of your actions may by this union be animated with divine Life – and all for the honor of the Father and the salvation of souls. May you participate in his life of charity, and may a divine light illumine you to see the depths and heights of the charity of a God made Man to redeem that which was lost. You participate in the spirit and the immense charity of Christ so as to be born this Christmas to a new life of charity – for “he that abides in charity, abides in God.”

SAINT KATHERINE DREXEL

Homily #100912 ( 23min) Play – In today’s Gospel we have the parables of mercy, the lost coin, the lost sheep, and to top it off, the parable of the prodigal son. Fr Dominic, during his first homily as the guardian of the friary here in Griswold, emphasizes the greatness of this mercy that is almost too good to be true if it weren’t spoken by Truth Himself. We need mercy and, fortunately, God wants to give it if we humble ourselves with true contrition for our sins and a firm resolve to reform our lives and persevere in this. This firmness of our resolve is the necessary and only worthy response to this great mercy that our great God is offering.  He also exhorts us to show mercy to others and pray for each other and to make use of the sacrament of mercy, that is, Confession, and the intercession of the saints. All of which is consistent with a firm resolve to amend our lives.

Homily #101101 ( 12min) Play – Fr. Dominic preaches on the need to desire sanctity in order to get to heaven and this is why we honor all the saints on this Solemnity of All Saints, to spur our desire. This desire must extend beyond our first fervor of a moment of conversion, and be fostered until the day we depart from this life. We must have purity of heart to achieve peace with God and peace among men in the likeness of Mary Immaculate. To get this long-lasting desire we must pray for it.

Ave Maria!

At the Symposium titled “Sursum Actio” at Notre Dame Univ. from Jun 8-9, 2015, in honor of the life work of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner, F.I., David Bentley Hart, Ph.D. , Professor of Theology at St. Louis University, gives the sixth conference which he titles, “Love and Knowledge: On Intellect and Intentionality”. He reflects on the Franciscan-Scotistic School of Philosophy and he points out, as championed Fr. Peter Fehlner, that knowledge always involves the will (intention and desire) of the soul at all the different stages of acquiring knowledge and growing in faith. As such, Bl. John Duns Scotus anticipated many of the questions raised by modern philosophers and gave answers to these that are logically coherent and incorporate the daily experience of our quest for knowledge of this world and of God.

The talk is followed by a commentary by Fr. Peter and then a round table discussion with the other presenters.

Fr. Peter:

Important to stress the relationship between nature and grace and not just their distinctiveness from each other.

Importance of distinction between rational and irrational creatures.

Natural happiness should be completed with supernatural happiness, that is, holiness.

Experience of the mystics is important in this discussion.

Round table:

Scotus as a continuation of St. John Damascene.

Scotus in relation to and distinction from Descartes and Brentano

Thomism more intellectual than Greeks and Scotus, natural desire for God vs supernatural desire. Scotus and de Lubac, rationality includes an absolute desire for God or it is nothing.

This symposium, Sursum Actio (“Lift up your Actions” or more loosely “Lift up your Hearts”), was organized in honor of the life work of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner after he won the Cardinal John J. Wright Marialogical Award of 2015 from the Mariological Society of America for his outstanding contributions to Mariology.
