BAGHDAD (AP) — The toll from the bloody siege of a Baghdad church rose Monday to 52 dead with dozens more injured, Iraqi officials said.

The standoff began at dusk Sunday when militants wearing suicide vests and armed with grenades attacked the nearby Iraqi stock exchange and then entered the nearby Our Lady of Deliverance church — one of Baghdad’s main Catholic places of worship — taking about 120 Christians hostage.

Homily #101114 ( 10min) Play – In today’s Gospel Our Lord tells us to be prepared for the Day of the Lord when he comes the second time to judge the living and the dead. He will come publicly in the end times in full Glory and those alive at that time should indeed be ready for it. But Fr. Dominic focuses on our personal Day of the Lord when we will die and meet our Lord to be judged. This is something that all of us will face and we do not know when it will come. As such, Father exhorts us to organize our lives to be continually prepared for that day, doing prayer and penance so that we can be with Our Blessed Lord for all eternity.

On the fifth Sunday of Lent, it is customary in many places to veil the sacred images in order to focus all our attention on Jesus and His upcoming death and resurrection. The resurrection of Lazarus in today’s Gospel points towards that, even though Lazarus was raised back into mortal life, but Jesus into immortal and glorified life. To emphasize his power over death, Jesus waited so that when he reached the home of Lazarus and his sisters, Lazarus was dead and decaying. For it is one thing to raise the recently passed, but to raise the putrefying even more shows the power of God. But even though Jesus knew what he was going to do, He wept at the tomb of Lazarus. The only other time he wept was right before he entered into Jerusalem to suffer, weeping not for himself, but for those that he knew would reject Him. This is a moving insight into the heart of the God-Man and the reality of his humanity. Finally, this reminds us of our own personal mortality, but that God enters this world and breaks definitively the power of death over humanity. God’s word to us is the same as to Lazarus: Come Out (from the tomb of death), Untie Him (from the bonds of sin), Let Him Go (to live the abundant life which starts here imperfectly and which we taste in the Eucharist). For, “Whoever eats[s] my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day” (John 6:54).

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on May 05, 2021, on how we Christians are branches of Christ, but there are two types, ones who are dead and ones who are alive, and this is based on how closely we are attached to Him who is the life-giving vine. In this light, we can see how the sufferings of this life with Christ are due to the pruning necessary to increase our holiness and fruitfulness.
