Dawn Eden author of “The Thrill of the Chaste” graciously gives the Roving Reporter an account of her journey from Judaism to Protestantism and then finally through the intercession of St. Maximilian Kolbe to Catholicism. And, of course, St. Maximilian led her to Our Blessed Virgin Mary who in turn gave her the inspiration for her book that teaches young adults and college students the importance of chastity. Fr. Angelo Geiger, F.I. blogs again on the Christopher West – Theology of the Body controversy. This time as a guest blogger on Dawn Eden’s The Dawn Patrol.

He points out that the discussion has deteriorated on many blogs into a shouting match between Christopher West haters and Christopher West groupies and in the process the real issue is lost.

He sees that we have to get a firm understanding of how original sin is the cause of both extremes, of Victorian prudishness on the one hand and the unrestrained lust of Hugh Hefner on the other. He insists that Christopher West’s blind spot is that does not grasp this point adequately and so he is in danger of falling into one of these extremes. Another insightful article by Fr. Dawn Eden, who last year gave us the great story of her conversion through St. Maximilian Kolbe and G.K. Chesterton, recently returned to Griswold, CT, and we accosted her for another interview which she graciously granted. This time she talks about her studies for her Masters in Moral Theology at Dominican House of Studies in DC  and how they relate to current issues in our society. In particular she refers to the recent debate on Christopher West’s interpretation of Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. She relates what she has found about how morality was taught before and after the Second Vatican Council and how this compares with West’s assertion that Catholic morality was very prudish before the Council. It was this assertion that was the basis for his very controversial Nightline interview where he favorably compared John Paul II to Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy, since both, in their own way, saved us from this supposed prudery. The fifth speaker for the 2013 International Courage Conference in Mundelein, IL, is Dawn Eden who gives a talk titled, “Healing Sexual Wounds with the Help of the Saints,” based on her book My Peace I Give You. She is also author of the Thrill of the Chaste, where she covers her experience of discovering the beauty of a chaste lifestyle. Here she reveals her exposure to sexual abuse as a child and how this led to a poor self image and a promiscuous lifestyle. She then relates how the saints helped her to see her own self worth in the eyes of God and so gave her the strength to live a Christian life.
