Ave Maria!

Roderick Murphy comes to Face of Pro-life to discuss with Corinn Dahm the Problem Pregnancy Center of which he is director and his new book, Stopping Abortion at Death’s Door. He describes how he makes sure that he keeps his crisis center near the local abortion mill and even moves when they move. He often has prayer services and Masses held in the on-premise chapel. He talks about the advertising that includes, Newspaper and TV ads as well as bus ads. He provides services to poor mothers like counseling, free diapers, and more. To help women decide not to have abortions he addresses the many economic needs that women have that bring them to this act of desperation. Working with sidewalk counselors to provide services that women need right as they are walking into death’s door, helping them improve their situation both in regard to moving away from abusive partners and training for better jobs.

His book is meant to be a one stop resource to start a crisis pregnancy center near an abortion clinic.  It includes:

  • Fundraising,
  • Getting a place,
  • How to work with many different people of different faiths to get a community effort going,
  • List of all abortion Clinics in the country so that people know where to put their crisis center.

He intends it to be a legacy for all that he has learned in his long pro-life experience.

Ave Maria!

At the Symposium titled “Sursum Actio” at Notre Dame Univ. from Jun 8-9, 2015, in honor of the life work of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner, F.I., Fr. Angelo Geiger, FI, from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas, gives the thirteenth conference which he titles, “In the Counsels of the Immaculate: Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner’s Contribution to the Renewal of Franciscan Immaculatism”. He points out how much Fr. Peter has contributed to renewing the great Marian tradition of the Franciscan Conventuals and how this is the way they will regroup and fulfill their mission of renewing the Church. Fr. Peter did this primarily by bringing to light the great patrimony of St. Maximilian Kolbe in promoting total consecration to Mary in the Church as a way of bringing to fruition the declaration of the Immaculate Conception as a dogma in 1854.

He starts by quoting from a work of Fr. Peter that he read thirty years ago that was instrumental in discerning his vocation with the Franciscans:

It is not so much a question of what place Mary has in our lives as what place we occupy in hers. That is the starting point of any discussion. Only when the correct starting point from which to begin  any study of the distinction relations between Mary and our order has been clearly identified, do we find ourselves in a position to assess the claims and implications of the militia movement within the order.

Fr. Angelo explains how much Fr. Peter has done to answer this question, “Where does the order fit into the plans of the Immaculate?” In the talk he mentions:

The Golden thread of St. Maximilian that divides the History of the Franciscans into two pages, the first page leading op to the declaration of the Immaculate Conception of Mary as a Dogma and the second page is the implementation of the dogma into the life of the Church.

How the stigmatization of St. Francis relates to the martyrdom of St. Maximilian in Auschwitz.

The many articles that Fr. Peter wrote, some as the editor of Miles Immaculata, which St. Maximilian founded.

How Mary Immaculate is the answer to the Franciscan and the Church going back and forth between worldliness and anti-ecclesial, apocalyptic sectarianism and how this resolves the Post-Vatican II crisis.

The Immaculatist roots of St. Francis and how he called her “Spouse of the Holy Spirit” and “Virgin Made Church.”

The observance of religious life at Niepokalanow and how it was both rigorous and yet not elitist

By choosing Mary, Francis and his followers chose the Church as well as being a reform movement of the Church.

Marian ecclesial form of life renews Conventuals by means of total consecration and in line with the tradition of large friaries like Sacro Convento and practicing the perfect common life in the City of the Immaculate, enabling Conventuals to achieve a synthesis between between extremes.

How Fr. Peter by starting the Academy of the Immacualte did so much to fulfill St. Maximilian’s  desire to start an academy for the study of the Immaculate Conception.

The many books and articles and  Fr. Peter wrote and edited as well as the symposiums he organized under the banner of the Academy of the Immaculate.

Some lines of thought in his writing for the Academy:

– Early roots of Franciscan Immaculatism
– St. Maximilian’s sources for his two page Franciscan history.
– A Marian Franciscan geography of faith using insight from John Paul II in Redemptoris Mater, relating the Portiuncula to the first page of Franciscan history and  Niepokalanow, St. Maximilian’s City of the Immaculate, to the second.

Evolution of the thought of Fr. Peter seeking first to achieve the balanced implementation of Vatican II in the Conventuals in order to avoid the fluctuation between extremes and how this was confirmed by Pope Benedict’s thoughts on the Joachimites. The solution being the sanctification of the intellect, the Sentire Cum Ecclesia, thinking with the Church according to the counsels of the Immaculate.

He concludes by pointing out the need for a City of the Immaculate as the most important patrimony given by St. Maximilian and how the role of the Franciscans but especially the City of the Immaculate is to promote total consecration to Mary Immaculate and thus renew the Church. He says:

But in the end it is not that Our lady needs us but that we need her. And the realization of this truth is something for which we will be eternally grateful to Fr. Peter.

The talk is followed by a commentary by Fr. Peter where he points out that Marian devotion is not an either/or, either Marian or Franciscan but both/and, where both complement each other.

Ave Maria!

Happy Thanksgiving to all our viewers from the US! We have much to be thankful for here at AirMaria, but most especially because today, Wednesday November 23, 2016, the eve of Thanksgiving Day is the tenth anniversary of the very first video post on AirMaria! It was done by Fr. Peter Fehlner with his theology series the Golden Thread on Blessed John Duns Scotus. This was before the official launch of AirMaria which was on the following feast of the Annunciation on March 25th 2007. The name was not even decided yet as you can see from the logo on the set which says FITVN for Franciscans of the Immaculate Television Network. As you know we went with AirMaria instead. At the time we were thinking of starting this we hadn’t even heard of YouTube and our first video came out about when YouTube was bought by Google. So this was cutting edge for its time and the rest is history.
And what a rich history it has been with over ten thousand posts on our website and over seven thousand videos just on Air Maria with most of them posted on YouTube and many other sites as well with cumulative views in the tens of millions.
We give thanks to God and to everyone for their continued interest both in being avid viewers on AirMaria and in donations and prayers. May God reward you all.

The poem “Lead, Kindly Light” by Cardinal Newman was written at a moment of crisis and expressed a serene trust in God. Today’s gospel expresses this hope that God will take care of those who seek him. And, as Father Angelo Geiger tells us, hope has two daughters: anger and courage. Anger gets us up and moving in the face of injustice or danger, but angry people don’t have the best judgment, and anger needs to be ruled by reason. When things look hopeless, we can either give up, or if we have manly virtue and trust in God, we move forward in courage. Because of original sin, we are our own worst enemies, but God is our best friend, and we need to ask for his grace and light to know how to see supernaturally and proceed through the thicket of life. Padre Pio said said “Pray, Hope, and Don’t Worry.” Does this mean to pray, hope, and sit back as God takes care of everything, or is a call to get to work. As followers of Christ, we know that it is God who saves us, not we who figure it all out. Let us be united to God with Mary, Our Mother and Our Strength, and we will solve the problems in the world and in our hearts.

On the Third Sunday of Lent, the readings focus on water and thirst on human and spiritual levels. These readings are directed towards those preparing for baptism, and invite us to renew our own Baptismal commitment. In the meeting of Jesus and the Samaritan woman, both thirst on a physical and spiritual level. The woman, like all souls, thirst for the living water of the Holy Spirit and grace, the only water that fully quenches. Jesus, rather, is thirsting for her faith, as He said on the Cross: I thirst. As he leads her to faith he first meets her on a mundane level by appealing to her physical thirst and leading her to a knowledge of her spiritual thirst and that it is He who can quench it. She had a thirsty soul, we all have thirsty souls. Natural water quenches for a few hours, spiritual forever. We are ‘living thirsts’, and can only find our fulfilment in God Himself. The symbol of spiritual, living water refers to the Holy Spirit, who is given the task of making us holy. He is constantly at work in us, but we are not always attentive to Him and so we continue to thirst. Let us imitate the docility of Mary to the Holy Spirit and deepen our devotion to Him. A world in crisis needs saints, but too many Christians are failing to live up to the greatness they are called to. Let us strive to be docile to the Holy Spirit so that He may make us into the saints we are called to become.
In closing, Father Jacinto refers to the “Secret of Sanctity” of Cardinal Mercier:

I am going to reveal to you the secret of sanctity and happiness. Every day for five minutes control your imagination and close your eyes to all the noises of the world in order to enter into yourself. Then, in the sanctuary of your baptized soul (which is the temple of the Holy Spirit) speak to that Divine Spirit, saying to Him:
O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore You. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me. Tell me what I should do; give me Your orders. I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me and to accept all that You permit to happen to me. Let me only know Your Will.
If you do this, your life will flow along happily, serenely, and full of consolation, even in the midst of trials. Grace will be proportioned to the trial, giving you the strength to carry it and you will arrive at the Gate of Paradise, laden with merit. This submission to the Holy Spirit is the secret of sanctity.

Ave Maria!

Ave Maria!

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner to his eternal reward, this morning May 8th, 2018. After a fall and a stroke. God rest his soul. Please keep him your prayers.

As small tribute we upload this video to YouTube and reposted it to AirMaria. It was the first in his theological series, The Golden Thread, and was the first video ever uploaded to AirMaria.com way back in November, 2006. In the coming days we will post any other videos from him that we might have in our archives.

Farewell Fr. Peter! You were a great example, mentor and a friend to so many of us in the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate and beyond. You will be dearly missed. May we meet again.
