Roving Reporter #71 – Friar Roderick and Fr. Paul Check ( 08min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

In this episode, Friar Roderick interviews Fr. Paul Check, priest from the Diocese of Bridgeport, CT, and Executive Director of Courage International, on his apostolate which works with those who struggle with same-sex attraction.  Fr. Paul focuses on the positive aspects of living a Catholic life in the midst of a decaying culture, and how to avoid getting caught in the tangled web of same-sex relationships.

We recorded Fr. Paul’s talk with the teens and we hope to get it posted sometime in the near future.

Homily #091227 ( 24min) Play – Today is the Feast of the The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and Fr. Bonaventure explains that the family is the core to a culture of life and saving the family from the attacks of the author of death, the Devil, is the central battle of our day. Jesus, Mary and Joseph are the exemplars of family life both in their exulted charity to which we should strive and in regard to the assaults that they survived in the form of Herod’s attempt to destroy them. Let us encourage the entire human family to embrace this ideal of love and courage.

Homily #100131 ( 15min) Play – Why is there so much outrage against Christ? To understand this you must recognize the existence of the Kingdom of  Satan and those who are apart of it. Christ, by coming to set people free from sin, has declared war on that kingdom. In his time Jesus prepared His disciples for this battle and so he does today.  We must take courage that He is with us especially in times of peril.

Ave Maria Meditations

Speaking out when necessary, with charity and fortitude and avoiding the silence of consent.Jesus does not always remain silent. For there is a silence which can collaborate with lying, a silence which can cooperate with cowardice, a silence which springs from the love of comfort and the fear of complicating one’s life. You can close your eyes to what is disagreeable. You can put off making a fraternal correction that ought to be made at home or at work. These are forms of silence too.

The word of Jesus is full of authority as He faces injustice and abuse: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses and for a pretence you make long prayers

Saint John the Baptist was the voice of one crying in the wilderness. He teaches us to say everything that must be said, even though it may seem as if we too are crying in the wilderness. Our Lord will not allow our words to be wasted. It is important that we say what has to be said, without worrying ourselves about the immediate consequences. If each Christian were to speak in conformity with the Faith, we would surely change the world. We cannot sit by silently in the face of such crimes as abortion and the degradation of marriage and the family. Nor can we surrender to those forces that would seek to remove God from the formation of the young. We cannot be silent at attacks upon the Pope and Our Lady, or upon institutions of the Church. To be silent when we should be speaking out can be a way of collaborating with evil, because others may think that our silence implies consent. If Catholics were to speak out when there is need, if they were to boycott anti-Catholic publications or literature, it would be more difficult for these enterprises to prosper.

We should speak out when necessary. At times, the occasion will be when we are with a little group of our friends, coming or going to school or work. In letters to the editor, we can write in praise of a good article or to criticize a bad one. We should always act with charity. It is worthwhile to remember that true charity goes hand in hand with fortitude. We need to exercize good manners, always working with the intention of bringing souls to Jesus Christ. Yet we should act at the same time with the fortitude of the Lord.

Ave Maria Meditations

Courage and strength in ordinary life.

Living up to the full the demands of the Faith and of our vocation.

If, upon realizing that his life was in danger, the Baptist had remained silent or retired to the sidelines of public affairs, he would not have been beheaded by Herod. But John was not that kind of man. He was not like a reed shaken by the wind. He was true to his vocation and his principles to the end. If he had remained silent, he could have lived a few more years, but his disciples would not have been the first to follow Our Lord. He would not have prepared and made straight the way of the Lord, as prophesied by Isaiah. He would not have lived up to his vocation. His life would have been bereft of meaning.

Jesus is probably not asking us to suffer a martyr’s death for him. But He is asking us for courage and fortitude in facing up to the demands of ordinary life – to stop watching a bad television show, to cease putting off an apostolic conversation … We cannot allow ourselves to hide behind excuses when there is so much apostolic work to be done. We have to act with optimism, loving the world and the good that is in it while seeking to increase that goodness. We can do this with the example of a joyful family and of the youthful love that is born of holy purity.

There are other kinds of cowardly silence which we have to struggle against. There is the silence we maintain with the person next to us. God has put him there so that we might be a beacon of light for him or her. In addition, it is hard to imagine that we can be courageous at all in this life if we are not first courageous with ourselves, especially when talking with our spiritual director.

Many of our friends, on seeing that we truly practice what we preach, will be attracted to the Faith. Centuries ago, many people converted after witnessing the martyrdom of the first Christians.  We dedicate this day to Our Lady. We ask her to teach us when to be silent and when to speak out.

Ave Maria!

His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke gives the opening keynote address titled “The Memory of Fr. John Harvey, OSFS and the Future of Courage and Encourage”, at the Annual National Courage Conference which ministers to people suffering from same sex attraction. After an introduction by Fr. Paul Check, Executive Director of Courage, Cardinal Burke gives a tribute to the late Father John Harvey the co-founder of Courage and EnCourage who was his personal friend.  He focuses on the many pastoral innovations that Fr. Harvey developed from his deep respect of the personhood of people with homosexual attraction leading them to accept and embrace the virtues advocated by the Church. He covers his deep devotion to his own parents and family and then his religious family the religious order of the Oblates of St Francis de Sales and the influence that these had on his great pastoral heart, what Courage has done and what it will accomplish in the future, especially the participation in the sacraments.
