Fr. James Rooney O.P., on the memorial of St. Pope Leo the Great and how he explained so well the doctrine or the Incarnation, that Jesus is both God and man united in one divine person. He was able to see past the apparent contradiction in this. Father relates this to today’s Gospel reading of the dishonest steward and the contradiction that the children of light are sometimes not as wise as the children of the darkness.

It’s time to say no to C-I-N-O Catholicism, says Fr Alan in today’s homily (Jun 28, memorial of St. Irenaeus, Bishop and Martyr). Today’s Gospel implies that Our Lord will not be satisfied with some who profess to be Catholic or Christian, but are so “in-name-only.” We all have to defend the Faith within our self and within society, by having the courage to denounce sin, heresy, and hypocrisy, both privately and publicly.

In the homily for the memorial of Pope St. Pius X (Aug 21), Fr. Matthias explains that Catholic theology admits of doctrinal development but rejects the idea of “evolution” of dogmas that would allow contradiction of established doctrine. Pope St. Pius X reminded us that dogmas cannot change content or meaning with time, and strenuously opposed the theory of the “evolution” of dogmas. Where there is contradiction between a theological opinion and an established dogma, there is no continuity, no development, no greater understanding of Catholic doctrine. There is simply mutual exclusion: both teachings cannot be true.

Catholics should be discerning enough to recognize and reject risky theological opinions which claim to develop dogma, but actually, contradict already-established doctrine in meaning and content.

On the memorial of St. Gregory the Great (Pope & Doctor of the Church, Sept. 3), Fr. Alan explains how the current crisis of sexual abuse within the Church conspicuously points to the need for reform, beginning by restoring the principle of truth in matters of faith and morals, especially with regard to sexual behavior.

St. Gregory reformed the Church in his day, addressing lost discipline in the clergy and in the liturgy by restoring the sense of sin and of the sense of the sacred. These fundamental issues are today undermined by the loss of the principle of truth, through relativism. A sense of truth must be restored in order to resolve the crisis at the root.
