Ave Maria!

We caught-up to Fr. Maximilian Dean in Carmel, IN at his last concert just prior to his entry into our new contemplative community in Tuscany, Italy near Florence last Fall. Father talks about his active ministry in music, producing Cornerstone videos and being Superior of Mt. St. Francis Hermitage. He then explains the importance of the contemplative life which our Lord calls the greater part and which has called him away from this activity into silence. Farewell, Father, and keep us in your prayers.

Ave Maria!

Homily #101005 ( 10min) Play – Fr. Dominic preaches on the Gospel story of the two sisters Martha and Mary where Mary sits at the feet of our Lord listening while Martha complains that she is left with all the work. He relates these two sisters the two forms of life, the contemplative by Mary and the active by Martha. He points out that both are needed but the contemplative is more important as Our Lord says, “Mary has chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

INDIA For Indian Contemplative, Mary is a refuge for thousands of poor people of every caste and creed - Asia News

by Nirmala Carvalho

Sister Gemma, prioress of the Carmelite Monastery in Mumbai, underlines the importance of the feast of the Visitation for the poor and for people who suffer. With her visit to Elizabeth, Mary brought to the world the love of Jesus, exemplified nowadays by charity and love of neighbour. This Sunday’s Worldwide Eucharistic Adoration with Pope Francis provides an opportunity to bring Christ’s face and love to the world through Mary.

Mumbai (AsiaNews) – “Thousands of people of all caste and creed, who call India home, pray to the Virgin Mary and have faith in her powerful intercession. Our Lady rushes to help those who suffer and live in poverty, becoming their refuge and hope. Today, feast day of the Visitation, Mary visits the heart of each of us,” said Sister Gemma, prioress of the Carmelite cloister in Mumbai, as she talked about the importance of bringing the Virgin’s message to one’s heart, in preparation for Pope Francis’ Worldwide Eucharistic Adoration next Sunday.

“The world today lacks love, solidarity and communion. With the great feast of the Visitation, Mary proclaims to the world the love of Jesus, witnessed through concern for others, in solidarity and communion with people in need of assistance. Man’s greatest need is the thirst for love and belonging. Mary rushed to help Elizabeth, and her very presence brought support and comfort.”

Homily #130721b ( 23min) Play – Fr. Casey gives the Sunday homily which is also the closing of the retreat here titled the ‘”The Spiritual Combat of Our Time”. Based on the Gospel of today with Martha complaining that her sister Mary is not helping and Jesus replying that she has chosen the better part, Fr. Casey stresses the importance of listing to Christ, attentive to his word, starting with scripture as Vatican II insists all Catholics should have:

  • Direct access to the Bible
  • prayer based on the bible
  • Knowledge of Scripture is knowledge of Christ

And also with prayer.

The essence of mental prayer is intimate friendship and heart to heart conversation with the One that you love.

Prayer must be a family event, part of the family culture, pass on a prayerful attitude to our children. Teens are constantly distracted, on the run, all their little cares. Technology, iPhones, etc. All of which distracts them from God. Need to be convinced of His goodness and graces and our inadequacy. Requires humility.

Need to have a balance of prayer and active life, the exact formula of which will be dictated by our state in life, married, single, religious. Even those engaged directly in apostolic work needs to pray. In fact, even more so since prayer is the soul of the apostolate. We must work with God. Without him we can do nothing.

In the homily for the memorial of St. Rita of Cascia (May 22, 2019), Fr. Maximilian explains Jesus’ teaching about the “vine and the branches” (Gospel, Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Easter). Our Lord “prunes” us by allowing us to suffer. The fruits he desires are those of redemption. Apart from the Vine, we cannot attain salvation, nor can we contribute to others’.

St. Rita of Cascia understood this and dedicated her life to suffering with Our Lord, with the mystical Thorn from the crown of his Passion.

Ave Maria!
