Ave Maria!

Fr. Peter Fehlner speaks at Steubenville University in 2007, at the invitation of Dr. Scott Hahn. The talk is on his book St. Maximilian Kolbe: Martyr of Charity – Pneumatolgist where he outlines the teaching of St. Maximilian on the the Holy Spirit and His relation to the Immaculate Conception. He covers St. Maximilian’s methodology, his teaching on the Holy Spirit, how it can resolve, revive and update theology on a sound basis and some of the objections raised against this Saint. He gives a brief discussion on the three titles of Mary, Complement of the Trinity, Spouse of the Holy Spirit and the Immaculate Conception, and how these titles apply to the Holy Spirit and Our Lady. The talk is followed by a question and answer session. Come listen to this fascinating talk on this sublime subject.

Topic: Consecration to Our Lady

Quote:
“[Consecration to Our Lady] means to sink our roots in Mary?s Heart with the happy certainty that he who plants his roots in Mary becomes holy? – St. Bonaventure

Father Stefano Manelli, FI, Devotion to Our Lady, (Academy of the Immaculate), 140.

Meditation:
Father Manelli explains:

There are two kinds of consecration to Our Lady:

1) Simple consecration. This is one that is made privately, or in some pious Marian associations (as the Daughters of Mary, the Legion of Mary, the Militia of the Immaculate), and it entails a generous and fervent individual apostolate.

The consecration of families (strongly recommended by St. Gregory), of children (even before birth), of a school, a town, of a nation, etc., belong also to this kind of consecration.

2) Consecration of ourselves as slaves of Mary, or as her property, or as a victim in a total sacrifice of love for her.

The consecration of oneself as a slave is taught by St. Louis de Montfort, and it expresses principally the sacrifice of ones liberty in order to live fettered and ruled by the love for Our Lady.

Consecration of oneself as her property was taught by St. Maximilian M. Kolbe, and this principally expresses an unconditional surrender of oneself into Mary?s Immaculate Hands as her instrument or property.
Father Stefano Manelli, FI, Devotion to Our Lady, (Academy of the Immaculate), 139.

Resolution:
Today I will say, as St. Louis de Montfort recommends:

Living with Mary, For Mary, In Mary

Each time I say these words, I will think of my spiritual roots sinking deeper into the Heart of Mary, and I will become holier. It won?t matter if I don?t feel holier. I will just trust, as Father Manelli points out, that the experience of the saints shows that one becomes holier with the Blessed Virgin Mary. (Manelli, 140)

Marian Vow: Father Manelli says ?The consecrated person ought to succeed in living with Mary, for Mary, in Mary? and then he asks, ?But how many are there who truly practice and live their Marian consecration in this way?? – Father Stefano Manelli, FI, Devotion to Our Lady, (Academy of the Immaculate), 139.

I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thanks be to God for graces received.

Ave Maria!

Topic: Praying with Our Lady

Quote:
“Someone truly in love with Mary finds time to turn to her as often as possible, to stay as long as possible at her feet. We would entrust our troubles and worries, and our whole life to her.” – St. Maximilian Kolbe (Crusade Of Mary Immaculate, Manchester England)

Meditation:
St. Edith Stein writes about meditative prayer:
“Here the spirit moves more freely without being bound to specific words. It immerses itself, for example, in the mystery of the birth of Jesus. The spirit?s imagination [Phantasie] transports it to the grotto in Bethlehem, seeing the child in the manger, the holy parents, the shepherds, and the kings. The intellect ponders the greatness of divine mercy, the emotions are seized by divine love. This is how meditative prayer involves all the soul?s powers and, when practiced with faithful persistence, can gradually remake the whole person.” – The Hidden Life, Volume IV of the Collected Works of Edith Stein, (ICS Publications: 1992), 39.

Resolution:
Today, I will make more opportunities to speak to the Blessed Virgin Mary. A simple ‘good morning’ or ‘good afternoon’ is an excellent way to begin. Today, my holy pictures will remind me to greet Our Lady. If my duties permit a lengthier conversation, I will pause to speak to her at greater length.

Marian Vow:
One condition for membership in the MIM as recorded in the Marian Seraphic Pathways includes ‘living the life of grace and cultivating it by daily prayer (vocal and mental), by the recitation of the Holy Rosary and by the frequent reception of the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist (at least on Sunday) and of Penance.’

I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thanks be to God forgraces received.

Topic: The Will of God & the Will of the Immaculate are One

Quote:
“Let us turn our gaze towards Jesus, our most perfect model. He who is God, supreme holiness, gives himself to the Immaculate without reserve and becomes her son.” – St. Maximilian Kolbe (Father Anselm W. Romb, OFM Conv, ed, The Kolbe Reader, Marytown Press, 171.)

Meditation:
“More than once, no doubt, we have come across the expression ‘God’s will,’ or perhaps this other one, ‘the Immaculate’s will’; or again, ‘the accomplishment of the Immaculate’s will is the shortest and surest way to holiness.’ And at first, perhaps, a doubt arose in our minds whether such expressions are strictly true.”

“Since our supreme legislator is God, our salvation depends on carrying out his will. The Immaculate is, indeed, the Mother of God, but compared with God’s perfection she is infinitely inferior to him a creature brought into being by his will.”

“Because the most Blessed Virgin surpasses in perfection all the angels and saints, her will is united with and made one in the closest manner with the will of God. She lives and acts solely in God and through God. Hence, by accomplishing the will of the Immaculate we accomplish by that very fact the will of God.” – St. Maximilian (Father Anselm W. Romb, OFM Conv, ed, The Kolbe Reader, Marytown Press, 170-1.)

Resolution:
Today I will reflect on the words of St. Maximilian.

I will remember to say The will of God and the will of the Immaculate are one as I pass my image of Our Lady. I will not be afraid to entrust myself to Her because it is in Her hands that I will become most Christ like.

Marian Vow:
“Let us follow Jesus’ lead. From now on let us renew the promise we made to the Immaculate. Let us undertake to live in such a way as to become every day and hour always more fully hers.” – Father Anselm W. Romb, OFM Conv, ed, The Kolbe Reader, (Marytown Press), 171.

I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thanks be to God for graces received.

Topic: Giving All to Mary

Quote:
“By this practice, faithfully observed, you will give Jesus more glory in a month, than by any other practice, however difficult, in many years.” – ? St. Louis de Montfort, The seventh effect of True Devotion to Mary

Meditation:
St. Alphonsus di Liguori explains why this devotion to Mary is truly efficacious.
“?Let us then, in the words of St. Bernard, ?endeavor to venerate this divine Mother with the whole affection of our hearts; for such is the will of God, who is pleased that we should receive every good thing from her hand. And therefore the saint exhorts us, whenever we desire or ask for any grace, to recommend ourselves to Mary, and to be assured that we shall receive it by her means; for he says, if thou dost not deserve the favor from God, Mary, who will ask it for thee, will deserve to receive it; ?because thou was unworthy of the gift, it was bestowed on Mary, that through her thou mightest receive all that thou hast.? The saint then advises us to recommend all that we offer to God to the care of Mary, be they good works or prayers, if we wish our Lord to accept them. ?Whatever thou mayest offer to God, be sure to recommend it to Mary, in order not to meet with a repulse.” The Glories of Mary, (Tan Books), 174-5.

Resolution: Today, I will make my Morning offering with renewed vigor recalling the great graces which exist when I turn everything over to Mary.

Marian Vow: “The Lord has said: ?No one who sets his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the Kingdom of heaven? (Lk. 9,62). Therefore, let the tertiaries strengthen themselves in fidelity to their consecration to God and the Immaculate by renewing each day their Profession with the Marian Vow, using the formula found in the manual of prayer.”? From the Marian Seraphic Pathways, Constitutions #21

I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thanks be to God for graces received.

Topic: First Mark of True Devotion to Mary

Quote:
?First, true devotion to Our Lady is interior, that is, it comes from within the mind and the heart and follows from the esteem in which we hold her, the high regard we have for her greatness, and the love we bear her.? – St. Louis de Montfort, True Devotion to Mary, 106.

Meditation:
Pope St. Pius X certainly had cause for concern during his pontificate. As Pope during the years preceding WW I, Pius X saw the evil that was about to befall the world in this colossal war. Yet amidst these heavy concerns this holy Pope practiced interior devotion and high regard for Our Lady?s greatness by saying:

?Let the storm rage and the sky darken ?not for that shall we be dismayed. If we trust as we should in Mary, we shall recognize in her, the Virgin Most Powerful ?who with virginal foot did crush the head of the serpent.? Francis T. Johnson, Voices of the Saints, (Tan Books)

Resolution:
Today I will imitate St. Pius? the Tenth?s great devotion and interior trust of Our Lady. I will pray an extra O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, the prayer written on my Miraculous medal which depicts our Lady crushing the head of the serpent. I will entrust my concerns to her.

Marian Vow:
St. John Eudes comforts those who have taken Our Lady as their Queen and ruler of all their actions and belongings:

?Blessed be the heaven and the earth which have for their Queen the admirable child Mary. For she possesses more light and wisdom, strength and power, than all the kings and queens who ever were or ever will be. And this little Mary is a great Princess and a most powerful Queen; Queen of men and Angels, Empress of the universe. She was Princess and Queen from the womb of her mother. ? Is it not suitable to the glory of the eternal King of Kings, that she who was to be His Mother should bear a royal crown even from her birth??
The Wondrous Childhood of the Most Holy Mother of God, (PCP: 1998), 237.

I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thanks be to God for graces received.

Topic: The Magnificat – Canticle of the Immaculate Heart

Quote:
?I call the Magnificat the true canticle of the most Holy Heart of the Blessed Virgin[because] it originated in her Immaculate Heart and its melody vibrated her heart strings before it found voice on her lips.? – St. John Eudes, The Admirable Heart of Mary, (Loreto Publications: 2004), 289.

Meditation:
?To thank God for the graces he has given to our Lady, her consecrated ones will frequently say the Magnificat, following the example of Blessed Marie d’Oignies and several other saints. The Magnificat is the only prayer we have which was composed by our Lady, or rather, composed by Jesus in her, for it was he who spoke through her lips. It is the greatest offering of praise that God ever received under the law of grace. On the one hand, it is the most humble hymn of thanksgiving and, on the other, it is the most sublime and exalted. Contained in it are mysteries so great and so hidden that even the angels do not understand them. ? – St. Louis de Montfort, True Devotion to Mary, #255

(If you would like to read more about the Magnificat in the spirituality of St. Louis de Montfort, please see this EWTN link: JESUS LIVING IN MARY: HANDBOOK OF THE SPIRITUALITY OF ST. LOUIS DE MONTFORT)

Resolution:
I will be sure to pray the Magnificat at least once today.I will think of this prayer as the canticle of the Immaculate Heart especially in Evening prayer from the Breviary.

Marian Vow:
“The tertiaries shall pray each day with the Church reciting at least the canonical hours of Lauds and Vespers. When this is not possible, in substitution, they are to recite twelve Our Fathers for each canonical hour. It is certainly praiseworthy to recite the canonical hours in community and in the presence of the most Holy Sacrament. The tertiary priests of the diocesan clergy, who already celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours each day, are not obligated to anything else.” -Marian Seraphic Pathways, Constitutions #28

I give this resolution to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Thanks be to God for graces received.

“You alone have destroyed all heresies in the whole world.” The Immaculate, therefore, crushes the head of the serpent and destroys his enormous body composed of the most diverse heresies of various times and places. It is not written, however, that the Immaculate destroys heretics, because She loves all souls and for the love that She has for them She destroys the “heresies”, with the aim of freeing them from the heretical plague.” (cf.
