Fr. Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Jun 24 on how John the Baptist’s name, whose birthday we celebrate today, means “The Lord is Gracious” and that this contrasts to the rough, penitential nature of John, the last of the prophets. His graciousness comes from Jesus to whom his whole ministry was directed. This focus on Christ made him the holiest of the prophets yet we are to become even greater because we are born again into the very family of Christ, the Trinity. Father also points out the humility of John the Baptist that is also based on his focus on Christ, giving us a great example.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Apr 13, 2022, on the severity of the betrayal of Judas, yet Jesus knew that he would betray him, and in this, He teaches us that we, too, must put up with bad actors in the Church and not let our angry reaction cause division in the Church.

He quotes St Augustine in one of his letters regarding a scandal in his time where he lists the many bad actors in the otherwise good families in the Bible.

We need to be realistic regarding human nature

Jesus is a master who brings good out of evil.

God laughs at evil rebellion, He who sits in heaven laughs

God knows who will oppose him and knows how to make his plans happen regardless.

God permits evil to bring about his plans

Evil shows the goodness of the righteous and enables them to exercise mercy

We must bear with difficult people as Jesus did regarding Judas

Judases do not have the heart of Christ

Do not look for a Church made in our own image but in Christ’s image

Be Christ-centered, not self-centered

Pray for the purification of the Church and pray for ourselves to stay loyal

Ave Maria!

Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Jul 22, 2022, on how St. Mary Magdalene, whose feast it is today, how the sins that she was at first involved in were centered on herself, leading to being passed by seven devils, and then she entirely centered her life on Christ when she repented and was forgiven by Him, following him even to Mt. Calvary and merited to be the first to see Christ and announce His rising to others.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Feb 06, 2023, and continues his series on Franciscan Spirituality as he explains the three general types of spirituality, God-centered, Christ-centered and Man-centered and how the Franciscan takes the central, Christ-focused path.

Three points of departure for theology and spirituality
Theocentric God-centered, glory
Christocentric, Christ-centered, love, charity
Anthropocentric, man-centered, reward

Theocentric – mainly from first millennium, oriented toward God in his adoration and fear of salvation, prayer penance, and the ascetical practices, desert fathers, Orthodox split off at about this time at the height of the theocentric theology spirituality and liturgy and have not changed much since

Christocentric – started with Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, 11th century focus on the necessity to pass through Christ, the one mediator between God and man, this was not ignored but not emphasized by theocentric. Need to be united with Christ and Grace to be in his body, the church.
Perfect love casts out fear.
Started with Clairvaux but was fully adopted by the Franciscans, who gave it its theological basis with the Absolute Primacy of Christ

Anthropocentric started in the 1500s with a Renaissance, which means to be reborn, as in the rebirth of the Roman and often pagan and secular thinking and culture. It focuses on humanity, man is the measure of all things. The interior life was considered in regard to humanity as far as the need to perfect oneself and the need to have the human initiative to put humanity in accord with the will of God with the help of His grace. The point of departure is man the point of arrival is God. Ignatian spirituality is this type

Franciscan it is Christo-centric between theocentric and anthropocentric. Christ is the God-man so he is in between, the mediator between God and man. Christ is at the center of our piety and our thinking. The absolute primacy of Christ. Christ is predestined from the very beginning, and all of creation is brought about for Christ and by means of him. Christ recapitulates, sums up, and completes all of creation and brings it all back to the Father. He is the universal mediator of nature, grace, and glory.

Franciscan spirituality is effective, focuses on feelings but it’s also involving theology and objectivity. Just as God comes to us by means of Jesus Christ, so too do we have to go back to God through Christ.

As Franciscans of the Immaculate, Christ came to us through Mary, so too do we go back to him through her in return.

We acknowledge Christ’s sovereignty over all things and we unite ourselves to him by means of love in order to relive his life in us.

When you add Marian consecration, according to St Maximilian Kolbe, it completes the family picture.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Apr 21, 2023, on how how to define Franciscanism, the cornerstones of Franciscan spirituality, as he continues his series on this subject.

Focus on Christ in the present, not in the past or the future.

St Maximilian Kolbe lived Franciscanim differently than St Giles of Assisi

Typical 3 periods of a religious order, 1 founder, 2 doctrinal, 3 growth

Ciccerelli Franciscan Spirituality is Gospel lived integrally in conforming to the church and in the needs of the times.

Must have love as the inspiration for every action

Move from fear to love which is the fulfillment of the law Rom 13: 10 https://bible.usccb.org/bible/romans/13?10

1 John 4: 16 God is love – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1john/4?16

Love is the center of Franciscan spirituality, and this will be talked about more in future homilies

Christ is the starting point as opposed to God-centered from earlier times or man-centered from later times

Means of union poverty, humility, and suffering, in other words, the cross, is not an end but a means

Fruits:

1 – interior joyful freedom to overcome oneself and the world – John 16: 33 I have conquered the world – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/16?33

2 – simplicity, spiritual simplicity, going to God directly as a child

3 – perfect joy from the procession of God, that no person can take away, making all suffering sweet

from Romans 8: 28 – We know that all things work for good for those who love God –  https://bible.usccb.org/bible/romans/8?28

4 – the Apostolate – our interior growth begins to bring benefit to others, bringing the light of Christ to all

Synthesis by Ciccarelli – Franciscan spirituality is the particular mode of conceiving and living the Christian ideal. It has love as the soul, as the animating force of every created and uncreated reality. It has Christ Jesus, Son of God and Son of Mary, as the foundation and center of the created universe and of the spiritual life of every man, of every person. It has the mystical union with God as its endpoint or goal.
It has God’s grace, along with poverty, humility, and suffering, as the means to reach this goal. It has as its fruits interior freedom and liberty, spiritual simplicity, perfect joy, and the apostolic work, the apostolate. And lastly, all of this is lived under a devout and faithful submission to the Church.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Aug 21, 2024, on how Franciscan spirituality emphasizes the union of grace and human effort in achieving Christian virtues, guiding souls toward a mystical union with God through Christ. This is a continuation of his series on Franciscan spirituality and the subsection, “End Game,” the final goal of all spirituality, union with God. – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNN151zTIO4&list=PLejh_e0-LN4xgMllKrzSasL2Hljd5BHom

These two phases of the spiritual life, the ascetical and mystical aspects, while conceptually distinct, are intertwined in practice, as both involve the collaboration of God’s grace and human will, much like the Incarnation, where God became man, and so was both fully divine and fully human. Since Franciscan spirituality is Christocentric, it emphasizes the role of God’s grace in the spiritual life, with Jesus’ Divine Person being the center of this spirituality.

Father notes that while non-Christians may practice virtues like strength, prudence, justice, and temperance, these virtues are purely human and lack the supernatural charity and divine grace that distinguish Christian virtues. Christian virtues are not just products of human effort but are the result of divine grace, communicated to us through our union with Christ. This idea is reflected in Jesus’ words in John 15:9 – “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love” – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/15?9 and John 15:5 – “I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/15?5.

Franciscan spirituality does not ignore the importance of human effort and psychological insights into virtues but places greater emphasis on theological virtues and the transformative power of divine grace. Grace is not merely an addition to human effort but is a divine gift that transforms our actions from the beginning. By following the impulses of divine grace, the Franciscan soul seeks a mystical union with God, as members of Christ’s Mystical Body.

CCC 2013 – All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity. – http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/2013.htm

CCC 1812 – The human virtues are rooted in the theological virtues, which adapt man’s faculties for participation in the divine nature. – http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/1812.htm
