Cardinal Raymond Burke gives the homily for the fifth and final Mass for the retreat for priest at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center. St. Ambrose took the bishopric of Milan on the insistence of the people to combat the errors of the time in an environment of established paganism and the growing heresy of Arianism. He himself being unbaptized first had to be baptized and then ordained a bishop. He then humbly began to be catechized by St. Simplician, adding sound Church teaching to his profound secular learning. By his thorough learning of the faith he became a great evangelizer, Christianizing the pagan city of Milan and cleansing it of Arianism, even when the emperor tried to reinstate it by force. He was instrumental in converting St Augustine and teaching him the faith. Let us pray to St. Ambrose and follow his example in order to combat the errors and paganism of our day.

Cardinal Burke gives the the 4th talk at the Priest’s Retreat at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center in Bloomington, IN. He reflects on the lives of saintly priest, namely St. John Vianney, Bl. Miguel Pro, St. Damien of Molokai and St. Maximilian Kolbe, and how they give a great example to priests in our challenging times. St John Vianney says we need to open up our hearts to the Sacred heart of Jesus revealed in the Holy Eucharist in order to be spiritual fathers.

Hermenuetics of rupture

• 1968 issues in the Church all things old were considered out of place. Shift to all things new and some of these things are problems, including undue familiarity that is meant to be a means to connect with people but blurs the idea of father figure that reflects our relationship with God. Some of this is a false humility where priests are acting as if they are just like anyone else when they are not.
• The source and ultimate meaning of the Priests life and ministry in the holy sacrifice of Mass where the Sacred Heart is pierced for the salvation of souls.
• Bearing the sufferings of the ministry that are becoming more frequent in our increasingly hostile, secular world is born by uniting ourselves to the sufferings of the Sacred Heart surrounded by the crown of thorns.
• Importance of reverent celebration of the Eucharist to help the world to know that the Lord is present. Should be Christ centered not priest centered and this is what the Second Vatican Council actually teaches.
• Cure de Ars arrived in Ars where the faith was in bad shape must like today. It was not innovation but Eucharistic adoration and confession that changed the place.
• Catechisis and priestly ministry is not separate, contrary to some modern thinking. Both through CCD programs and homilies.
• Bl. John XXIII underlines importance of preaching in St. John Vianney
• Holy hours for priests very important, a mini daily retreat from our incessant activities to recharge and unite.

The topic is the “New Evangelization and the Priesthood” which is related to the Year of Faith for the 50 anniversary of the first session of the Second Vatican Council and covers:

• Misconception that the discipline in Canon Law is somehow antithetical to pastoral considerations
• Three fold aspect

1. Reach new people,
2. Help existing Christians grow,
3. hHelp those Christians who have wandered far off.

• Christifideles Laici post synodal letter
  • Faithful are being put under test by onslought of atheism and indifferentism especially in First World  where consumerism is prevalent
  • Secularism portrays Religion as just a side show
  • Urgent repair is need to stem secularism
  • Do what we can to uphold Christian aspect of US culture
  • Mend Christian fabric of society but first must fix Church interiorly
  • Separation of faith from daily life, “Personally opposed but…”
  • Need to hear gospel with freshness of first apostles
  • Society says all authority should be restricted and questioned except the authority of myself
  • But need to take up the cross and do the Father’s will
  • Specifically priests, must involve entire people of God.
  • Need to be immersed in mystery of Christ
  • Good way for his is Devotion to Sacred Heart of Jesus
  • Catholics will respond to their priests and seek for their leadership
  • Devil does not rest. Be vigilant, especially priests

  • Did not really want cannon law but out of obedience
  • Most all priests considered canon law as useless and something they thought was done away with
  • This is part of the hermeneutic rupture
  • Discipline is in continuity with pastorship

  • No dichotomy between canon law and
  • Great harm was done by this spirit against the Church discipline

  • Natural link between what is good for the individual and the truth of the status of the individual in regard to salvation

    • Are they Catholic or not? Principle of non-contradiction comes in which is a principle of objective truth irregardless of religion.

  • Canon Law is helpful to the New Evangelization

Eucharistic Center

This is a small little preview of the much-asked-about John Paul II Eucharistic Center here at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of the Angels Monastery. To Catholics and believers of all faiths alike, the reason for the Shrine, while prominent, remains an inexhaustible mystery. At the center and heart of the chapel here is Christ, truly present in the Eucharist. The JPII center is a ‘small’ yet significant and innovative tribute to Jesus’ unfathomable gift to us – Himself in the Eucharist. Here, visitors to the Shrine can step into recreations of a Jewish home at Passover (a foreshadowing of the Eucharist) and a constructed synagogue like the one where Christ gave the discourse in John chapter 6.

On display are immense paintings depicting the price Christ paid to give us this memorial of His passion and death. Multi Media presentations including stunning reenactments of historical Eucharistic miracles as well as dynamic question and answer segments at various booths. Not least of all are tributes to Saints and martyrs who gave the ultimate confession of faith in Christ’s Real Presence – their own life. Homily #150921l ( 16min) Play – Cardinal Raymond Burke reflects on the Gospel account of the calling of St. Matthew. Jesus feeds those who invited him to feast. But Jesus is not the Messiah who would be a worldly leader but to show mercy and the truth which will set us free and give us happiness. We must grow in faith. Our Lady of Guadalupe helps us in this. St. Matthew was an example of a good response to Christ’s call. He was disposed to conversion and became one of the blessed described in the sermon on the Mount. Holy Mass gives us the Eucharist which is the food that is truth.

Cardinal Burke was here to lead a pilgrimage of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre from Minneapolis to La Crosse and to bid farewell to the FI friars Fr. Peter Fehlner and Fra Joseph Schmitzer who are headed to Griswold, CT.
