Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Mar 14, 2023, on how Francis based his spirituality on the bible in a very complete, simplistic, balanced way, unlike anyone before or after him.

Notes:

He lived the bible wholly and simply but without attacking the corrupt clergy

virtuous balance but with a whole heart

Embraced poverty of Bethlehem, Calvary, humility, charity, chastity, obedience, without condemning, penance tempered by meekness, simplicity of a child

All from the Scripture

Read the gospel with faith and applied it immediately to his current moment.

Abhored what he previously loved, as in honors of the world, and loved what he formerly abhorred, as in lepers and poverty.

He had one tunic because Gospel said only one Mat 10: 10 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/matthew/10?10

La Verna wished to experience what Christ did on Calvary and was given the stigmata.

Inspiration and action were inseparable.

Side note: young people inspired by Francis should seek advice from their pastor and the Church, do your discern with the Church and in the Church, just as Francis did.

Isaiah 53: 4 – maternal love for lepers – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/isaiah/53?4

Psalm 138 – Canticle of the Sun – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/psalms/138

Br Leo Franciscan blessing – “May the lord bless you and keep you…” Num 6 24-26 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/numbers/6?24

psalms David 22: 7 “I am a worm and no man” – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/psalms/22?6

Mat 10: 12 – “peace to this house” – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/matthew/10?12

Mat 6: 6 – “retire to one’s closet to pray” – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/matthew/6?6

Profound union with suffering Christ and love of the eucharist John 6 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/6

Galatians 6: 14 embraces the folly of the cross – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/galatians/6?14

Why is the world following you, Francis? Francis replies, God could not find a more vile creature to humble the proud world, 1 Cor 1: 27 – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1corinthians/1?27

Heb 11: 13 – strangers and pilgrims on this earth – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/hebrews/11?13

1 Cor 13 – perfect joy and charity – https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1corinthians/13

Absorbing and putting into action sacred scripture, unlike any other saint before or since.

Ave Maria!

Fr Terrance gave the homily at Bloomington, IN, on July 9, 2024, on how the poetry and songs of St Francis were the most sublime prayers and praises of God’s great works, and how they profoundly affected the spirituality and even the literary culture of his time and place. This is a continuation of his series on Franciscan spirituality and the subsection, “Theology of Art,” emphasizing the place of Art in Franciscan understanding and how it should lead us to God.

Father discussed the artistic soul of St. Francis, emphasizing his role as a poet who transformed mystical experiences into poetic expressions, notably through his “Canticle of the Sun.” This canticle, which parallels the “Canticle of the Three Young Men” from Daniel 3:57-88 – Hymn of praise from the fiery furnace and Psalm 148 – All creation praises the Lord, stands out for its spiritual depth. St. Francis’s work surpasses even Dante’s mystical heights, praising God and celebrating the beauty and brotherhood of all creation. His hymns invoke various elements of nature, attributing to them a voice of praise for their creator. Unlike Psalm 148 – All creation praises the Lord, which directly praises creatures, Francis turns to the Lord, seeing in every creature a reflection of God’s glory. His poetry is a profound act of worship and a testament to his artistic originality.

St. Francis’s work inspired Italian literature, with Dante himself echoing Francis’s themes of divine love in his “Paradiso.” Father concluded by encouraging us to see the good in life, as St. Francis did, which brings us closer to seeing the face of God.
