Dr. Paul Byrne referring to his book Life, Life Support, and Death talks about another aspect of Pro-life, the end of life. Dr. Byrne as a neonatologists, and father of 12 children and grandfather of 27 knows the medical and practical aspects of the beginning of life. From his experience of saving babies that were actually declared brain dead he started to study the issue and discovered there is no such thing as brain death. This term was invented to enable transplantation of major organs, that is, to create a supply of organs. But here is the catch, ‘brain dead’ patients are not dead until the removal of their major organs kill them. He also points out that many patients who are declared brain dead can be saved and live a normal life. When dead is not really dead. We really need to think this through better.

“I remember a little bit that was about an hour before the accident happened. But then about six hours before that, I remember,” he said.

Dunlap said one thing he does remember is hearing the doctors pronounce him dead.

“I’m glad I couldn’t get up and do what I wanted to do,” he said.

Not enough is taught on this subject to dispel the myths of organ donation.

AARHUS, Denmark — Carina Melchior is a 20-year-old Danish woman who was plunged in the middle of controversy by two close encounters with death — the first in car crash last year that put her in a coma; the second in a hospital, where doctors persuaded her parents to donate her organs and shut off her life support.

But Carina recovered, and she now is at the center of a storm of questions about the criteria for brain death, over-aggressive transplant agencies and the commodification of the human body.
