Homily #100101 ( 16min) Play – Solemnity of the Mother of God. Mary’s Divine Maternity is key to the beauty and wonder of this holy season of Christmas because it highlights the fact that Jesus is true God and true man, two natures united, yet remaining distinct, in one Divine Person. As such Mary is truely the Mother of God. Father explains how this central truth of the Incarnation has fought ancient paganism and pantheism and how it will be the main means to fight the modern forms of these errors, which Father calls Techno-Pantheism.

In an address made on December 17th, Pope Benedict XVI highlighted the role of Mary, who is all beauty – ‘tota pulchra’ – in guiding us to the Way of Beauty – the ‘via pulchritudinis’. Once again, and echoing John Paul II before him in his Letter to Artists, Benedict highlights the importance of art united to the liturgy and manifesting theology; and the importance of the formation of this art through dialogue between artists, liturgists and theologians.

Ave Maria!

Fr Angelo gives the second talk at this year’s Coredemption Conference at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, WI on Oct 15. It is titled Bright as the Sun, Fair as the Moon: Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Way of Beauty and uses the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to show the relationship between prudence and art, i.e. moral and physical beauty. Then he shows the role of memory in our spiritual life through a way of beauty and how the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe replaced the despairing, dark memories of Aztec religion with beautiful, hopeful ones, and finally makes an analogy between the events at Tepeyac and our current predicament.

Fr. Ignatius reflects on the attributes of being: goodness, truth, and beauty, and how they can be attributed respectively to the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He notes that beauty tends to be feminine, underscoring how St. Maximilian Kolbe called Mary the quasi-incarnation of the Holy Spirit and how her fullness of grace coming into the world is the beginning of the dawn of the Son of Justice. Father relates this to things of this world including music, and even Christians, especially those consecrated to Our Lady.

Ave Maria!  The coronation of the Virgin Mary was honored last month by the restoration of a beautiful painting depicting it, at St. John’s CoCathedral in Valletta, Malta.

The St John’s CoCathedral Foundation has unveiled the restoration of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, a majestic and large painting which was in dire need of intervention.

The painting was in an advanced state of deterioration because of the movements it had sustained, especially when it had been removed from its frame and placed into storage during war time, Cathedral CEO Cynthia de Giorgio said.

Past interventions covered some of the details of the iconography obscuring the original aesthetics of the composition. The layers of varnish that had been given to the painting had darkened over the years rendering the canvas surface dull and the subject difficult to comprehend.

The restoration methods used in this project reversed past interventions and brought the painting close to its former condition.

“The process unveiled the elegant iconography of the mannerist style of this painting which can now be safely placed as a production of the late 16th century,” she said.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Jan 01, 2021, Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, on how Mary exemplifies humility, mercy, and charity and how these virtues are interrelated, forming a trifecta of virtues, consistent with her election by God to be His Mother. He explains that Love is the most important virtue, consistent with the Franciscan school of thought perfected by Bl. John Duns Scotus. To deny that Mary is the Mother of God is to fall into one of two heresies, Monophysitism, which denies that Jesus had two natures or, Nestorianism, which claims Jesus was two persons. The true doctrine of the incarnation is that Jesus has two natures, divine and human, harmoniously united in one Divine Person. We should be like him where our behavior outside of Church is in harmony with our behavior and profession in Church on Sunday.

Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Jun 18, 2021, on how God is Beautiful, another of His divine attributes, and one of the transcendental attributes or categories of being which God has to an infinite degree. Creatures only participate in these attributes. He defines beauty as intrinsic integrity that manifests itself outwardly. It is primarily a spiritual value that goes beyond what we see and lasts beyond the outward beauty that tends to corrupt. He uses the examples of Mother Theresa of Calcutta and a harmonious orchestra. All of God’s attributes are perfections that reach full beauty and unity. His beauty is most perfectly manifested in Heaven where God will be our lamp that will shine beauty on all. Beauty on earth can raise our minds the beauty of the creator and inspire us to be beautiful in God’s eyes by growing in grace, becoming more like Jesus and Mary.
