Ave Maria Meditations

Blessed John Paul II’s Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes:

Hail Mary, poor and humble Woman, Blessed by the Most High! Virgin of hope, dawn of a new era, We join in your song of praise, to celebrate the Lord’s mercy, to proclaim the coming of the Kingdom and the full liberation of humanity.

Hail Mary, lowly handmaid of the Lord, Glorious Mother of Christ! Faithful Virgin, holy dwelling-place of the Word, Teach us to persevere in listening to the Word, and to be docile to the voice of the Spirit, attentive to his promptings in the depths of our conscience and to his manifestations in the events of history.

Hail Mary, Woman of sorrows, Mother of the living! Virgin spouse beneath the Cross, the new Eve, Be our guide along the paths of the world. Teach us to experience and to spread the love of Christ, to stand with you before the innumerable crosses on which your Son is still crucified.

Hail Mary, woman of faith, First of the disciples! Virgin Mother of the Church, help us always to account for the hope that is in us, with trust in human goodness and the Father’s love. Teach us to build up the world beginning from within: in the depths of silence and prayer, in the joy of fraternal love, in the unique fruitfulness of the Cross.

Holy Mary, Mother of believers, Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.  Amen.

This prayer was said during the Holy Father’s  August 15, 2004 visit to Lourdes, France.  The Pope asked her among other things to “be our guide along the paths of the world.”

Fr John Lawrence gives the homily at Bloomington, IN, on Oct 18, 2023, on the life, writings, and ministry of St Luke, whose feast it is today.

St. Luke is the author of the Gospel according to St. Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Collectively, his contributions account for over 27.5% of the New Testament. He was also a faithful companion of St. Paul, and together, they wrote more than half of the New Testament.

In today’s Gospel, unique to St. Luke’s writings, he speaks of the sending of the Seventy-Two. This account showcases the lineage and mission of the priests as collaborators of the bishops. Tradition, through St. Epiphanius, suggests that St. Luke might have been one of these Seventy-Two, though other signs indicate he was not of Jewish origin but of Gentile origin, making him unique among the evangelists. Historically, Luke was believed to be from Antioch in Syria. His writings, especially in Acts, accompany St. Paul’s journeys, and their close connection is evident in the similarities between their accounts, like the institution of the Eucharist.

St. Luke’s Gospel is notable for its detailed accounts, particularly about Our Lady. He alone gives us events like the Annunciation, Visitation, Presentation, and the Finding of Jesus in the Temple. Without St. Luke, essential elements of our faith, like the joyful mysteries of the Rosary or the prayer Hail Mary, would not exist.

His Gospel, based on careful research and firsthand accounts, emphasizes themes like poverty, prayer, and God’s mercy. Parables like the prodigal son and the Good Samaritan underline God’s boundless love and mercy.

As per ancient sources, St. Luke passed away at 84 and is honored by the Church as a martyr.
