In ieiunio et fletu orabant sacerdotes: parce Domine populo tuo, et ne des hereditatem tuam in perditionem. Inter vestibulum et altare plorabant sacerdotes dicentes: Parce populo tuo.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Fasting and weeping, the priests shall pray: Spare thy people, Lord, and give not thy heritage over to destruction. Between the porch and altar, the priests shall pray: Spare thy people. Hear my prayer, O Lord
and let my crying come unto thee.
~~~~~~~~
Derelinquit impius viam suam, et vir iniquus cogitationes suas, et reveratur ad Dominum, et miserebitur eius: quia benignus at misericors est, et praestabilis super malitia, Dominus Deus noster.

The wicked man forsakes his ways, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him: for the Lord our God is gracious and merciful, and ever ready to relent when he threatens disaster.

Roving Reporter #112 – A Special Offering for the Madonna in Italy ( 04min) >>> Play

Ave Maria!

Every year in the town of Campocavallo, Italy, there’s a festival on the first Sunday in August called “The Festival of the Covo.”  For the past 70 years, a group of dedicated lay people have constructed a religious sculpture to honor the miraculous image of the Madonna of Campocavallo, and have processed the sculptures through the streets of the town with much festivity.  The sculptures are very unique: they’re often larger than the size of a large automobile, and they’re constructed out of steel and wood and the grain from the local fields.

The sculptures from the past few years have been particularly beautiful.  They’re replicas of famous churches from around the world.  Recently, Friar Terrance had the opportunity to visit the Museum of the Covo and film some of these artistic treasures.

Ave Maria!

In an address made on December 17th, Pope Benedict XVI highlighted the role of Mary, who is all beauty – ‘tota pulchra’ – in guiding us to the Way of Beauty – the ‘via pulchritudinis’. Once again, and echoing John Paul II before him in his Letter to Artists, Benedict highlights the importance of art united to the liturgy and manifesting theology; and the importance of the formation of this art through dialogue between artists, liturgists and theologians.

Ave Maria! Here is an article about the Basilica that we staff. A restoration process on the “Salus populi Romani” in St. Mary Major has just been finished. The image has been revered as miraculous since at least the 15th century, and Pope Pius V had the image carried through Rome in prayer for victory before the Battle of Lepanto. The image depicts the Virgin Mary in a blue robe, carrying the child Jesus who is holding a jeweled, golden book. This ancient icon has now been restored and last Sunday was revealed to the public.

The head of the Vatican Museums, Barbara Jatta, said the restoration uncovered the “delicate” colors of the faces of Mary and Jesus, and the brilliance of the child’s golden robe and the blue of Mary’s tunic.

The restoration also will help scholars date the painting, whose origins are disputed. Tradition has it dating from Jerusalem in the 5th century and purportedly painted by St. Luke himself. In an article in Thursday’s Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, Jatta said the true date is more likely between the 11th and the 13th century.

Pope Francis’ favorite icon of the Madonna in Rome has gotten a face-lift. In addition to cleaning the image and repairing issues dating from previous restorations, restorers made a new showcase for the icon — lighter and with handles — to allow for easier and safer transport for the various religious celebrations where it’s displayed.

Many years before Our Lady revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception to St. Bernadette in 1858, artists strove to convey her privileges visually to the faithful. Art Historian, Elizabeth Lev explores some of the artistic devices employed to illustrate Mary’s mysterious glories.

Artists of the Counter-Reformation bring home the Church’s complex and difficult teachings on the Virgin Mary.

Sometimes referred to as ‘Catechisms in stone,’ medieval cathedrals, like Notre Dame in Paris, used storyboard-like images to teach timeless truths about the Faith to the faithful. Our Lady’s  roles as Refuge of Sinners and Terror of Demons shine brilliantly in the following story of Theophilus.

Each year, in honor of the Sacred Heart, the townspeople of Genazzano decorate the streets with elaborate carpets of flower petals. A Eucharistic procession ensues, followed by a parade of participants dressed as Biblical figures. The following videos present the masters’ individual and grand-scale accomplishments.

Regarding the history of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Good Counsel- Madonna del Buon Consiglio- the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia writes,

“Records dating from the reign of Paul II (1464-71) relate that the picture of Our Lady, at first called “La Madonna del Paradiso” and now better known as “Madonna del Buon Consiglio”, appeared at Genazzano, a town about twenty-five miles southeast of Rome, on St. Mark’s Day, 25 April, 1467, in the old church of Santa Maria, which had been under the care of Augustinians since 1356. The venerated icon itself, which is drawn on a thin scale of wall-plaster little thicker than a visiting-card, was observed to hang suspended in the air without the slightest apparent support; thus early tradition, which furthermore tells how one might have passed a thread around the image without touching it. At once devotion to Our Lady in Santa Maria sprang up; pilgrim-bands began to resort thither; while miracles in ever-increasing numbers, of which a register was opened two days after the event, were wrought, as they still continue to be, at the shrine.”

The flower-mosaic below recalls the appearance of the miraculous image in the town.
