Continuing his discourse on Old Testament prefigurements of Mary, Fra Joseph shows the many ways Mary is like the Ark of the Old Covenant, and how this gives biblical evidence for the Catholic Marian doctrines of the Immaculate Conception, Divine Maternity, Perpetual Virginity. Homily #131121n ( 09min) Play – Fr Angelo explains that Jerusalem was the spiritual center of Israel because the Lord dwelt there in His glory, but when the ark was lost at the time of the Babylonian exile, the Glory of the Lord, manifested in overshadowing of the Glory Cloud, left the Temple. Today we celebrate the entry of the True Ark back into the Temple, she who would soon be “overshadowed by the Spirit of the Lord” and contain within herself the Lawgiver, the Bread of Heaven, and the High Priest of God.

Fr. James Dominic Rooney, O.P. gives the fourth of five talks for the retreat on St. Bonaventure’s “The Journey of the Mind to God” which relates St. Francis’ ascent up Mt. Alverna where he encountered the Crucified Christ to our own journey to God. In this talk we reach the top of Mt. Alverna and enter the Night of Darkness as we encounter God. This is represented by Bonaventure as the the two top wings of the six winged seraph that point inward like the wings on top to the Ark of the Covenant. By going inward, in love, we meet and know the unknowable God.

Happiness is beholding God in all of this mystery face-to-face. Then we will know what he is.

You cannot really answer the question who is God. You cannot use the intellect but must use love.

This wing is about knowing the three persons Father, Son, Spirit via love.

God is pure goodness he is the best, the highest good

Bonaventure said that you can prove that God is three persons by his goodness. Is he the best father the perfect of the like the father on earth looks perfected? The Father, Son, Holy Spirit are not what God is, but who God is.

You get to this highest level you cannot do it by knowing him but by loving him. The virtue of faith is not because you understand but because you accept the authority from someone else, like a teacher. We may not understand, but we do have the knowledge based on the belief in the authority of others. What we are doing in faith is sharing God’s knowledge of himself.

Beneath the wings of the two cherubim on the ark is the Cross. We know God through Jesus Christ, man made in the perfect image of God. The apparent contradictions in God are resolved in Christ.

Fr Ignatius gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Jan 11 on how we can not presume on God’s help when we are not being faithful. He uses the biblical example from today’s reading where the Isrealites brought the Arc of the Covenant into battle to defeat the Philistines but this instead resulted in a resounding defeat due to their sins that they were not willing to amend. Let us hope but not presume.

In the homily for the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Nov 21), Fr. Matthias explains how Our Lady is the true Ark of the New Covenant, prefigured by the Ark of the Covenant which was lost in the Old Testament and “found” again with her Presentation in the Temple.

In this Feast of the Blessed Virgin, we celebrate the “return” of the True Ark to the Temple, in order that She might prepare the chosen people for the Incarnation of Christ, the coming of the Lord’s dwelling among us as God made Man.

This symposium took place at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe October 11-12, 2019 and had 8 talks, 2 QA sessions, and 2 Homilies. The theme was “Mary Coredemptrix: Why the Dogma?” and included a commemoration of the Marian legacy of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner.
