August 21st:? Anniversary of Our Lady’s Apparition at Knock, Ireland
?
Vision of Peace
An intense love for the “ever Immaculate Mother of God” and her children suffering in purgatory – these were the two characteristics which strongly marked the deep piety of Venerable Archdeacon Cavanagh, Parish Priest of Knock at the time of the apparition.?? Several months before the apparition, Archdeacon Cavanagh found he could gratify his holy desire of saying one hundred Masses for the souls in purgatory whom our Blessed Mother most wished released. The great poverty of the people deprived him of the temporal help which other priests have from the celebration of the holy sacrifice for the intentions of the people. He made it known that he rejoiced to find he was free to follow his desire and to offer the adorable sacrifice for these holy souls in purgatory. On the morning of the twenty-first of August, 1879, this saintly priest, standing before the altar of Knock church, had the happiness of completing his incomparable gift of mercy in favor of the holy souls ?the last of the hundred Masses had been offered.???

?In the evening twilight of that same day the exterior of the south gable-end of the church and some space around it were enveloped in a radiance not of earth. In the profoundest spaces of this light there was a vision which, in several of its features, has rightly been considered apocalyptic in character. The vision had a focal point of supreme significance: a Lamb, facing towards the other figures of the apparition, was standing on a full? sized altar. Behind the Lamb and away from him, a large cross stood erect on the altar. Triumphant over death and radiating the splendors of his glory, this Lamb clearly represented Jesus-the risen and glorious Lamb of God-who redeemed us by his sacrifice.

From the silent summits of contemplation that overlook the eternal city our Lady gazed with immortal rapture on the divine Lamb and she was so transformed in his beauty and gladdened by his presence that it seemed as if a fountain of joy had broken in her heart. She appeared as if completely, yet serenely, held by the wonder and glory of her vision which shone upon her in a revelation which eternity will never exhaust. She did not speak. The beauty of her vision had ravished every human attraction from her lips.? At Knock, Mary had freely willed her silence.

A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE APPARITION

At about 8 o’clock on Thursday evening the 21st August, 1879, Our Lady, Sr. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the South gable of the Church at Knock.

Our Lady wore a large white cloak, fastened at the neck. Her hands and eyes were raised towards heaven, in a posture of prayer. On her head was a brilliant crown and where the crown fitted the brow, was a beautiful rose.

On her right was St. Joseph, head bowed and turned slightly towards her as if paying her his respects. He wore white robes.

On Our Lady’s left was St. John the Evangelist, dressed as a bishop, with a book in his left hand and right hand raised as if preaching. His robes were also white.

Beside the figures and a little to the right in the centre of the gable was a large plain altar. On the altar stood a Lamb, facing the West and behind the Lamb a large cross stood upright. Angels hovered around the lamb for the duration of the Apparition.

?There were fifteen official witnesses to the Apparition which was enveloped in a heavenly light. They included men, women and children of various ages. They watched the apparition for two hours, in the pouring rain and recited the Rosary. It was so real that an old lady, Brigid Trench, went up to the gable and tried to kiss the feet of Our Lady.

Ave Maria!

Msgr. Arthur Burton Calkins (bio) an internationally renowned Marian Theologian and an official of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei gave a talk titled “Our Lady of All Nations, the Woman of Genesis and the Apocalypse” at our Amsterdam Coredemption Conference on May 31, 2008. In this excellent, scholarly talk Msgr. Calkins connects the Marian apparition on Our Lady of All Nations and many other approved apparitions with that of the woman of the proto-evangelicum in Genesis and of the Apocalypse and so connects a wide spread of Marian private revelation with the entirety of Biblical Revelation all in support of the Coredemption.

In this time of somewhat gloomy thoughts, let us recall the words of St. Paul: Whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Phil.4:8)  And there are few things more lovely, more gracious, more just, more excellent and more pure to consider than the mysteries of Our Blessed Lady. Here is an encore meditation on the wondrous Miraculous Medal.

OLMM

Daily Miraculous Medal Prayer of St. Maximilian Kolbe:

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you,

and for all who do not have recourse to you, especially the enemies of the Church

and those recommended to you.

Explanation of the Miraculous Medal:

On the one side, Mary is standing upon a globe, crushing the head of a serpent beneath her foot. She stands upon the globe, as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Her feet crush the serpent to proclaim Satan and all his followers are helpless before her (Gn 3:15). The year of 1830 on the Miraculous Medal is the year the Blessed Mother gave the design of the Miraculous Medal to Saint Catherine Labouré. The reference to Mary conceived without sin supports the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary—not to be confused with the virgin birth of Jesus, and referring to Mary’s sinlessness, “full of grace” and “blessed among women” (Luke 1:28)—that was proclaimed 24 years later in 1854.

On the reverse side of the medal there are twelve stars that encircle a large “M” from which arises a cross. Below are two hearts with flames arising from them. One heart is encircled in thorns and the other is pierced by a sword. The twelve stars can refer to the Apostles, who represent the entire Church as it surrounds Mary. They also recall the vision of Saint John, writer of the Book of Revelation (12:1), in which “a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars.” The cross can symbolize Christ and our redemption, with the bar under the cross a sign of the earth. The “M” stands for Mary, and the interleaving of her initial and the cross shows Mary’s close involvement with Jesus and our world. In this we see Mary’s part in our salvation and her role as mother of the Church. The two hearts represent the love of Jesus and Mary for us. (See also Lk 2:35).

STCL

HOW THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL CAME TO BE:

Summary:

St. Catherine Laboure, A sister in France in 1830, was given the grace to have Mary visit with her 3 times.  The second time, St. Catherine saw her standing on a globe with rays of light streaming from her hands.  Around Mary were the words: “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee.” Mary told St. Catherine to have a medal made that looked exactly like that.

St. Catherine did what Mary told her.  The medals were called the Medal of the Immaculate Conception.  As soon as people started wearing the medals, miracles were happening.  People started calling them the Miraculous Medal.

Chapel of the Miraculous Medal at the Rue du Bac in Paris

And from the Association of the Miraculous Medal is more detail of the apparitions

to St. Catherine Laboure:

The Medal of the Immaculate Conception – popularly known as the Miraculous Medal – was designed by the Blessed Virgin herself! No wonder, then that it wins such extraordinary graces for those who wear it and pray for Mary’s intercession and help.

The First Apparition:

The story begins on the night of July 18-19, 1830. A child (perhaps her guardian angel) awakened Sister (now Saint) Catherine Labouré, a novice in the community of the Daughters of Charity in Paris, and summoned her to the chapel. There she met with the Virgin Mary and spoke with her for several hours. During the conversation Mary said to her, “My child, I am going to give you a mission.”

The Second Apparition:

Mary gave her this mission in a vision during evening meditation on November 27, 1830. She saw Mary standing on what seemed to be half a globe and holding a golden globe in her hands as if offering it to heaven. On the globe was the word “France,” and our Lady explained that the globe represented the whole world, but especially France. The times were difficult in France then, especially for the poor who were unemployed and often refugees from the many wars of the time. France was first to experience many of those troubles which ultimately reached many other parts of the world and are even present today. Streaming from rings Mary’s fingers as she held the globe were many rays of light. Mary explained that the rays symbolize the graces she obtains for those who ask for them. However, some of the gems on the rings were dark, and Mary explained that the rays and graces were available but did not come because no one had asked for them.

The Third Apparition and the Miraculous Medal:

The vision then changed to show our Lady standing on a globe with her arms now outstretched and with the dazzling rays of light still streaming from her fingers. Framing the figure was an inscription: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Then Mary spoke to Catherine: “Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck.” Catherine explained the entire series of apparitions to her confessor, and she worked through him to carry out Mary’s instructions. She did not reveal that she received the Medal until soon before her death 47 years later.

The Conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne by the Miraculous Medal:

On January 6, 1842. Alphonse, a young Jewish banker, has just arrived in Rome. The scion of Strasbourg’s most important Jewish family, he is a man of the world: wealthy, refined, sophisticated, agnostic (a former atheist)…a friend of the Rothschilds, entirely at ease in the salons of the nobility. He is fiercely anti-Catholic: As he himself puts it, the very name of the Jesuits provokes him to fury.

A friend gets him to submit to a bet of sorts, calling it a test.  Since he claims to be immune to all things of religion, would he consent to wearing a medal of the Holy Virgin and praying a simple prayer called the Memorare?  Alphonse reluctantly agrees, finding the whole thing most distasteful.

While sightseeing with his friend some time later, they stop at a church. The friend has some business to attend  so Alphonse decides instead to come inside to see the church interior.

Alphonse is alone. Suddenly a large black dog bounds menacingly in front of him. But then, in the next moment, the dog disappears. In fact, everything disappears, as if a veil has been drawn over the church interior. A brilliant light blazes from a side chapel, the Chapel of the Archangels. It’s as if all light has been concentrated at that one spot.

And in the center of the light, Alphonse sees her. She is standing on the altar: “tall, brilliant, full of sweetness and majesty.” She is so blindingly beautiful that, after one glance at her face, he casts down his eyes. Repeatedly he tries to raise his eyes again, to behold that beautiful face. But he cannot. He can’t raise his eyes past the level of her hands, which are outstretched, with light streaming from her fingers — just as in the image on the Miraculous Medal.

But her hands are very expressive. To Alphonse, they speak of “all the tenderness of the Divine Pity.” With one hand, she gestures to him to approach. He does so, on his knees. After he has advanced a few paces, she gestures again, as if to signify: “Enough–that’s good!”

Then, as he gazes on the light streaming from her fingers, he receives the gift of Infused Knowledge. Faster than thought, he understands all: his own profound sinfulness (especially the enormity of Original Sin); God’s infinite love and mercy toward poor sinners, revealed in the Incarnation and Crucifixion; the beauty and truth of Catholicism; the reality of Christ’s Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament.

A Jewish agnostic reared in a skeptical milieu, he has never even heard the term “Original Sin”; now he instantly knows what it is, more profoundly than if he’d been studying the subject for years.

The entire experience takes mere moments.

The friend returns and he spots the young man: slumped, kneeling, with his head against the altar rail in the Chapel of the Archangels. He is sobbing, murmuring between sobs, “How happy I am! How good God is! How unbelievers are to be pitied!”

Alphonse Ratisbonne converted to the Roman Catholic Faith and would become a priest working for the salvation of souls, especially the Jewish people, for the rest of his life.

Blesseds Francisco and Jacinta Marto, children of Fatima, Feast day is February 20th.

Our Lady appeared to three small children in Fatima in 1917. She told two of them, the brother and sister, that they would soon go to heaven but Francisco would have to pray many rosaries. These little children had seen a vision of hell and did penance in their young lives.
Francisco would spend much time in prayer at the tabernacle of the Church. He longed for Heaven and was thrilled at the thought of being able to see Jesus and Mary forever. In his last illness, he continually made the sacrifice of taking any medicine or food which was given him, no matter whether he liked it or not, without complaining. As his illness progressed, he could no longer say his prayers out loud, but he continued to pray “with his heart.” At Francisco’s request, the parish priest came to give him his first Communion, which he had not yet received. It would be his last Communion – Francisco died peacefully the next day, April 14, 1919.  He was only 10 years of age.

Jacinta was attacked by the Spanish plague almost at the same time as her brother Francisco.  She too spoke of nothing else than of reciting the Rosary and offering sacrifices for sinners.  Towards the end of January, 1920, Jacinta was taken to Lisbon to be operated upon for a persistent lung infection.  There she immediately impressed all by her candor, her modesty, her great patience, her perfect submission, her continued prayer and ardent love for Holy Communion which she received every day except when prevented by illness.  Many doctors came to examine Jacinta; their only thought was of science and medicine.  They discounted the influence God might have on the condition of the patient.  The little girl did not hesitate to set them straight on the matter, pointing out the cause of their frequent failures.  “Pity doctors.  They have no idea what awaits them.  Doctors do not know how to treat patients with success because they have no love for God.”

The Blessed Virgin continued to encourage this heroic virtue by her apparitions.  One day, when Mother Godinho, Superior of the orphanage, came to see her, Jacinta asked her quite naturally:  “Could you come back a little later?  I am expecting the Blessed Virgin any minute!”  The effects of these visits from heaven manifested themselves not only in the supernatural wisdom of the child’s words, but also in her predictions.

What ardor did not this child of ten preach amendment of life, not only to sinners, but also to faithful souls!  How she insisted on flight from sin, the practice of the Christian virtues and penance!

“Oh!” she said to the Superioress of the Orphanage in Lisbon, “if men only knew what eternity is, how they would make all possible efforts to amend their lives!

Dear Godmother (she addressed the Superioress in this way), mortification and sacrifice give great pleasure to Our Divine Lord!  Oh! Fly luxury! Fly riches! Love holy poverty and silence.

Be very charitable even towards the wicked!  Never speak evil of anyone and avoid those who do.

Be very patient because patience leads to heaven.

Pray much for sinners!

Pray much for priests, for Religious, for Governments! The sins of the world are too great!

The sins which lead most souls to hell are sins of the flesh! Certain fashions are going to be introduced which will offend Our Lord very much. Those who serve God should not follow these fashions. The Church has no fashions; Our Lord is always the same.

Many marriages are not good; they do not please Our Lord and are not of God. . . . Oh!  Men must do penance!  If they amend their lives Our Lord will still pardon the world; but if they do not, the chastisement will come!

Priests should occupy themselves only with the affairs of the Church!  They must be pure, very pure.”

Mother Godinho asked her: “Do you know what it means to be pure?” “Yes, Yes. I know to be pure in body means to be chaste, to be pure in mind means not to commit sins; not to look at what one should not see, not to steal or lie, and always to speak the truth, even if it is hard.

The disobedience of priests and of religious to their Superiors and to the Holy Father offends Our Lord very much!

Our Lady said that there are many wars and discords in the world.  Wars are only punishments for the sins of the world.  She stated that she could not stay the arm of her Beloved Son upon the world anymore.  It is necessary to do penance.  If people amend themselves, Our Lord shall still come to the aid of the world.  If they do not amend themselves, punishment shall come.”

When Jacinta was at the orphanage in Lisbon, before she was sent to the hospital, she spent every possible moment in the chapel kneeling with her eyes riveted on the tabernacle.  Seeing people in church being irreverent toward the Blessed Sacrament upset her greatly.  She stated that Our Lady does not want us to talk in church.  One day she heard visitors discussing faults of a certain priest who had been forbidden to say Mass.  Jacinta began to weep for sorrow and she said people should not talk about priests but they should rather pray for them.

Blessed Jacinta’s Death

February 20, 1920 came.  Jacinta seemed about the same; she might last a few more days, she might go any moment.  About six o’clock in the evening the child said she was not feeling well and she wanted to receive the last rites of the Church.  A priest was called, heard her confession and promised to bring her Communion in the morning.  Jacinta asked him to bring it immediately but he could see no reason for alarm.  She insisted that she was to die shortly.  At ten-thirty, she died peacefully without having her wish fulfilled.  She had just turned ten years old.  The news of the child’s death spread fast through the city and crowds flocked to the church to see the body.

The undertaker testified that he never before nor after had a case like Jacinta’s. “It seems to me that I can still today see the little angel.  Laid in the casket she seemed to be still alive, in her full beauty with rosy cheeks and lips.  I have seen many bodies in my business, young and old.  Never did a thing of this sort happen to me before nor since.”  The pleasant aroma that exhaled from her body cannot be explained.  The worst unbeliever could not question it . . .  Though the child had been dead three days, the aroma was like a bouquet of flowers.  Fifteen years after Jacinta’s death, her body was transferred to the cemetery of Fatima. When her casket was opened on this occasion her little body was still whole and incorrupt.

MAY 13TH: OUR LADY OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT/

OUR LADY OF FATIMA

Mother of the Eucharist

OUR LADY OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

This title was given to our Blessed Mother in May 1868 by Saint Peter Julian Eymard to honor her in her relationship to the Holy Eucharist and to place her before us as a model in our duties and devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Our Lady gives witness to being Christian. In her conduct toward the Blessed Sacrament, we learn what ours should be!

She believed in the reality of Christ’s presence in the Holy Eucharist. In other words, the virtue of faith was as necessary for her as it is for us. Great was her faith in her son, the Son of God, our Savior, and in all his teachings and deeds. This faith of hers found its particular exercise in regard to the Blessed Sacrament, the mystery of faith, the denial of which implies the destruction of the whole structure of our belief.

A second point in which Mary conformed to the general body of the faithful was her Sunday attendance at the Eucharist. And still another point in which the Blessed Virgin is our model is in her reception of Holy Communion during her life, and at the moment of her death. By her faith in and her love for our Lord in the Eucharist, Mary is an example for Christians and thereby brings us to fervent devotion to him.

Truly, we can call Mary, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, and follow her faith and love for Jesus in the Eucharist. Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament is the chosen and official patroness of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. Her feast day is celebrated on May 13, the date on which the new Congregation received Archdiocesan approbation in Paris in 1856.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

Blessed are you, Mary, exalted Daughter of Sion! You are highly favored and full of grace, for the Spirit of God descended upon you. We magnify the Lord and rejoice with you for the gift of the Word made flesh, our bread of life and cup of joy. Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, our model of prayer in the Cenacle, pray for us that we may become what we receive, the body of Christ your son. Amen.

In all of Our Lady’s true apparitions, she desires there to be built a church where the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass can be offered and where her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, can be adored and worshipped. Just one example of this occurred at Fatima, Portugal on May 13, 1917. It was the Feast of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament…

Prayers from Fatima

Pardon Prayer:
My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I implore Your pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You.  Amen.

Angel’s Prayer:
Most Holy Trinity – Father, Son, Holy Spirit – I adore You profoundly and offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the earth, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference by which He Himself is offended. And by the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and those of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer
Most Holy Trinity, I adore you! My God, my God, I love you in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Ave Maria Meditations encore

OLOG

Some of the words of Our Lady to St. Juan Diego:

Know for certain, littlest of my sons, that I am the perfect and perpetual Virgin Mary, Mother of the True God through Whom everything lives, the Lord of all things near and far, the Master of heaven and earth.

I wish and intensely desire that in this place my sanctuary be erected. Here I will demonstrate and exhibit and give all my love, my compassion, my help and my protection to the people. I am your merciful Mother. The merciful Mother of all of you who live united in this land, and of all mankind, of all those who love me. Here I will hear their weeping, their sorrow, and will remedy, and alleviate all their multiple sufferings, necessities and misfortunes.

Listen, put it into your heart, my youngest and dearest son, that the thing that frightens you, the thing that afflicts you, is nothing: do not let it disturb you, Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need something more? Let nothing else worry you or disturb you.

In 1531, the Mother of God appeared to a native Mexican named Juan Diego. She would ask him to have the bishop build a church there at the apparition site. When the bishop asked for a sign, roses were given but more than that, the image of the Mother was on the cactus fiber tilma of St. Juan Diego and fibers that should not last more than 20 years are still in perfect condition almost 500 years later. And within a decade of the apparition, almost all of Mexico was Roman Catholic.
