“In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control,” the author wrote Wednesday on her Facebook page. “In the name of … Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen.”

Rice will not be taking up vampires again, but she said she is a big fan of the HBO series “True Blood,” enjoyed the first two “Twilight” movies (she has yet to read any of the Stephenie Meyer novels) and is interested in seeing her most famous character, the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt, return to the screen.

In spite of the above story’s emphasis on Rice’s non-return to vampire novels, Rice is, it seems, reverting to the back to the state of the undead.  I have not read her novels, but apparently, her vampires are sometimes homosexual (Lestat de Lioncourt), they are feminist (The Queen of the Damned), and certainly they are wildly erotic.  So when she says that she is leaving the Church because she refuses to stand against homosexuality, feminism and artificial birth control, she seems to be allaying herself once again with the world of vampirism.

This is particularly significant for me as I research the topic of the occult and literature.  The world of darkness is alive and well in the form of “new religious movements.”  Many of them propose themselves to be compatible with Christianity.  Rice goes on:

For those who care, and I understand if you don’t: Today I quit being a Christian. I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being “Christian” or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to “belong” to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.

This is the real peril of literary and theatrical occultism: the promotion of esoteric, occultist, non-conformist Christianity.  And that, my friends is blasphemous, sacrilegious and diabolical.  Satan is pedaling cheap peace, and when we accept it on his terms, he will cut our hearts out.

Christian souls are both the battlefield where the struggle between the devil and the Son of Man is decided, as well as protagonists in the playing out of this meta-historical struggle in the world. Our day is not unlike the first days of the Church, when the undeniable authority of Christ went unheeded by many, even though demons were manifestly obliged to obey Him. Now in the de-Christianized West, as then in Palestine, we are called to give witness to salvation in Jesus Christ and to follow Him, regardless of the attitude of the world toward Him and the Church.

In the homily on today’s Gospel, Fr. Andre relates the parable of the weeds (darnel) sown among the wheat to the end times imagery contained in the Book of Revelation. Those with the “mark of the Beast” can be likened to the darnel mingled with good seed, and both images serve as a metaphor for the situation of apostasy in our own day.

As good wheat in the field of the Lord’s harvest, we are called to reveal the sign of the cross, with the help of Our Blessed Lady, Spouse of the Holy Spirit.

In the homily for Wednesday of the Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time (Nov 20, 2019), Fr. Alan affirms that, just as the mother in Maccabees encouraged her sons to die for the faith rather than capitulate to a merely human law, we too should encourage each other to stay true to God’s law rather than transgress to comply with erroneous human will, even if be the will of “all the nations.” Such may be the case in principle with some of the U. N. Sustainable Development Goals: we have to oppose them because they imply transgression of the divine will.

Let us remember the words of Our Lord and King: “All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world” (Mt 28:18-20).

On the memorial of St. Hilary (Bishop and Doctor of the Church, Jan 13, 2020), Fr. Alan gives the homily on how the Fourth Century heresy of Arianism, the false doctrine denying the divinity of Jesus Christ, is again apparent in deviations from the true faith today. Relating the present situation to Our Lord’s proclamation and call to conversion heard in today’s Gospel, Father reminds us of the urgency of his message at all times. Despite the present-day lack of faith, it is as true now as it was when Jesus said it: “The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”
