Referring to a Washington Post article from the Religious News Service called Papal Mystery: Is Benedict Downplaying Vatican II by Decrees? which Fr. Fessio finds is the best summary of the objections to the Motu Proprio as expressed by two Catholic priests:

1. Rev. James F. Puglisi from the Center for Union in Rome who says:

… the Good Friday liturgy in the Tridentine Missal contains a prayer for the conversion of the Jews that refers to their “blindness” and the “veil [on] their hearts.”

and thus undoing the more conciliatory phrasing of the new liturgy and so undoing Vatican II

But Fr. Fessio says that the reference to the Jews is in the Gospel not just the Council of Trent and it also in the Vatican II documents but expressed in different terms. And to want to convert someone to your religion is to love that person.

2. Rev. William Henn from Pontifical Gregorian University says that stressing an interpretation in Continuity with past Councils would be to say there is nothing new in Vatican II.

To this Fr. Fessio responds, Vatican II is in continuity with past councils but is new in that it clarifies things in the light of current concerns.

He further clarifies the recent document on ecumenism by quoting the Vatican document Unitatis Redintegratio that shows that what the Congregation of the Doctrine and Faith wrote under the direction of Pope Benedict is in full agreement with Vatican II and he is just dispelling confusion and misinformation regarding the Council.

Introduction

1. The dignity of a person must be recognized in every human being from conception to natural death. This fundamental principle expresses a great “yes” to human life and must be at the center of ethical reflection on biomedical research, which has an ever greater importance in today’s world. The Church’s Magisterium has frequently intervened to clarify and resolve moral questions in this area. The Instruction Donum vitae was particularly significant. And now, twenty years after its publication, it is appropriate to bring it up to date.

The teaching of Donum vitae remains completely valid, both with regard to the principles on which it is based and the moral evaluations which it expresses. However, new biomedical technologies which have been introduced in the critical area of human life and the family have given rise to further questions, in particular in the field of research on human embryos, the use of stem cells for therapeutic purposes, as well as in other areas of experimental medicine. These new questions require answers.

Homily #100213 ( 08min) Play – Fr Angelo preaches on the Gospel for the Memorial of Our Lady on a Saturday. Our Lady and St Joseph seek our Lord for three days before finding him in the Temple, but all the while they new the questions that they had in their hearts would be answered. We too need patience in this regard.

He tells why, sometimes, God doesn’t seem to answer our prayers, and emphasizes that God is constantly reaching out to us; the question is: are we reaching out to Him? Do we have faith in him like the Canaanite woman from today’s Gospel reading? In prayer we confess our need for God, and demonstrate our faith in Him. We can see how much the world needs prayer, Our Lady at Lourdes, Fatima, and other places has asked for prayer and penance. God is asking us, “Turn to me in persevering prayer, show Me your faith.”

For the first Question and Answer Period, the panel includes: Fr. Elias Mills, Dr. Mark Miravalle, Msgr. Arthur B. Calkins, Fr. Angelo Geiger, Mr. Raymond de Souza, Br. Emanuel, MS-ISHM. The questions include: Are the apparitions at Amsterdam to Ida Peerdeman approved? Will we be given a victory by Our Lady through the Rosary and when? Could Mary have said “No” at the Annunciation? How do we recognize saints and their ability to attract others to sanctity? How do we get our priorities straight on the issues today?

This symposium took place at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe October 11-12, 2019 and had 8 talks, 2 QA sessions, and 2 Homilies. The theme was “Mary Coredemptrix: Why the Dogma?” and included a commemoration of the Marian legacy of Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner. It was sponsored by the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate in conjunction with Mark Miravalle and the International Marian Association (IMA)
