Friday abstinence was not abolished; rather, the faithful (U.S.A.) now have a choice either to abstain from meat or perform some other kind of penance (or charitable work) on Fridays. According to the Church’s law, the ‘substantial observance’ of Fridays as days of penance, whether by abstinence or in other ways, ‘is a grave obligation.’ (Pope Paul VI, Paenitemini, 1966, Norm II, 2).” – Fr. Homily #150220n ( 09min) Play – Father gives us some practical notes on fasting, abstinence, and penance for this Lent and for the whole year. He reminds us that as Christians, we are bound by God’s law to do penance, and that the Church gives us specific days of penance so that we may be formed in an authentic Christian spirit. Father comments on the laws of the Church about days of penance (some of which may surprise you), and gives us St. Francis de Sales teaching on fasting. Finally, Father comments on the obligation the Church imposes on us to do penance, that it binds under pain of sin, and that the reason for it is to form us into authentic Christians who take seriously today’s words: “The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”

Alan explains how the death of the virgin Agnes, described by St. Ambrose as “one victim, but a twin martyrdom, to modesty and to religion,” illustrates the Christian vocation to bear witness to God, by example and by confession. Agnes’ heroic fidelity constitutes the highest charity toward God and neighbor.

Fr. Matthias gives the homily at New Bedford on the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children (Jan 22, anniversary of Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that “legalized” abortion). Father points out that the term “unexpected pregnancy” is frequently employed as ab justification for the taking of innocent human lives in their mothers’ wombs, but the truth is that abortion has been legalized precisely because pregnancy is an expected outcome of irresponsible and immoral sexual behavior.

In the homily for the memorial of St. Agatha (Virgin and Martyr, Feb 05), Fr. Matthias explains how the virtue of chastity combined with the self-sacrificial love of martyrdom, as exemplified by St. Agatha, is what the Church needs today. Deflecting attention from the problem of unchastity and blaming the present crisis on “clericalism” may very well be itself an expression of clericalism. The crisis will go unresolved until the root cause is acknowledged: lack of virtue, particularly the virtues of chastity and fortitude.
