It was a symbolic morning at the Vatican which was led by three Popes: Pope Francis declared Paul VI blessed, accompanied by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

Benedict XVI, although frail, followed the ceremony attentively.

In front of thousands of people, the Pope inscribed Paul VI in the Book of Saints.

“…Ut Venerabilis Servus Dei Paulus VI, papa, Beati nomine in posterum appelletur.” (“We declare that the Venerable Servant of God Paul VI, Pope, shall henceforth be invoked as Blessed…”)

As is usual during beatifications, this tapestry was unveiled

Cardinal Montini was worried during the conclave, knowing full well what was waiting for for him. During his 15 years as Pope, he fearlessly confronted the challenges of his time through 7 surprising gestures.

He sold the tiara

Believing that the Pope is not a monarch, he renounced the triple tiara one year after the conclave. It was sold with the money going to Mother Teresa of Calcutta. No Pope has used the tiara since.

A group of American Catholics purchased the tiara for $1 million. Today, it is housed at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

The First traveling Pope

Pope VI exchanged the boat of Peter for an airplane. He visited 19 countries throughout

I’ve said in my posts before that it’s an exciting time to be a Catholic. Yesterday’s beatification of Pope Paul VI is yet another indication of this time. We now have three popes that served nearly one after the other in the 20th century as saints of the Catholic Church. Although Paul VI has not been officially canonized, we know that he is there in Heaven with his predecessor, Pope St. John XXIII and his successor, Pope St. John Paul II.

In honor of our newest beatification, I now give you some of the words on the Blessed Virgin Mary from Blessed Pope Paul VI –

1. “This pious practice, by which the Blessed Virgin Mary is honored and the Christian people enriched with spiritual gifts, gladdens and consoles us. Mary remains ever the path that leads to Christ. Every encounter with her can only result in an encounter with Christ himself” – Mense Maio #2

2. “The general norm ‘Through Mary to Jesus’ is therefore valid also for the imitation of Christ. Nevertheless, let our faith not be perturbed, as if the intervention of a creature in every way similar to us, except as regards sin, offended our personal dignity and prevented the intimacy and immediacy of our relationships of adoration and friendship with the Son of God.” – Signum Magnum, Part 2, Section 2.

Homily #141201n ( 20min) Play – Father reminds us that what Christ assumed, He redeemed. He assumed a human nature from the Blessed Virgin, and redeemed human nature, and he also, in a way, assumed a human family by being born into one, and thereby also redeemed the family. As of late, the Christian family has been the subject of confusion and is under attack by both the world and, sadly, even by Church leaders influenced and blinded by the world. We can expect waves to assault the Church, but we can also know that the Church will survive and continue. We can expect what happened in 1968 to happen again, and to bring that back to mind, Father quotes from an address by James Francis Cardinal Stafford where he reflects on the events surrounding the release of the encylcical Humanae Vitae and the ensuing dissent and violence which entered the ranks of the priesthood. Father ends by reminding us that even if we are alone as we stand in defense of the teachings of the Church, the Church will survive, and we will to, but only if we stay aboard.
