In order to call us to repentance, God will allow us to suffer various evils in order to wake us up to the sin in our lives. If we want to be happy and have peace of soul, he shows us, we must come before the Lord and ask to be able to see our sins, and once we see them, to mortify, discipline, and correct them. And let us do this now, for “Already the ax has been put to the root of the trees, so that every tree which does not shew good fruit will be hewn down and cast into the fire.”

We will have many difficulties in this life, but when we bring them to the Crucified Lord, He will console us and give us the strength to continue on. We can see this in the Martyrs who never lost track of eternity amid their sufferings and offer them the veneration that Pope St. Damasus I encourages us to.

Homily #131219n ( 13min) Play – Today’s readings present us with two miraculous conceptions- that of Samson and of John the Baptist. Father Angelo describes how these are prefigurements to  the Annunciation, then he compares and contrasts the visit of the Angel to Zechariah and later to Mary, and shows that while seemingly similar, the response given is profoundly different. Mary responded with questions to discern the will of God, but Zechariah’s question was one of doubt. Finally, Father exhorts us to examine our own faith and response to God’s graces, and encourages us to use the last few days of Advent to do penance for our lack of faith and to implore the Blessed Virgin to share in the faith with which She awaited the birth of Her Son.

Angelo preaches over today’s gospel and shows us that immediately after the Annunciation, Mary went “with haste” to her cousin Elizabeth to assist her during the final months of pregnancy and to bring to her to the “Good News.” Reflecting on this, Father shows we need to respond to the good news of Christmas with faith and joy, and then put it into action by the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.  May we do this in union with Mary, for She is our model in faith and charity, and may She bring Jesus to us as She did to Elizabeth.

Homily #141130n ( 13min) Play – When we turn away from the Lord, we sin, Father tells us. But the Lord can also turn away from us too. He does this by letting us have our own way; he abandons us to our own designs and desires, and we go from bad to worse. He does this to wake us up to our need for Him and His grace, and that recognizing our pitiful state, we may turn back to Him. Let us pray to Our Lady that She may acquire for us the grace to be watchful for the indications of God’s will and that this Advent may be a time to prepare for His coming at Christmas, and to be ready for when He comes to meet us at the end of our time in this world.
