Mariology for Everyone-Lecture One: God’s Revealed Will and Mary: Part 1

This series is a complete 50 part introductory course on Mary presented by Dr. Miravalle, a theology professor specializing in Mariology, who has been teaching at the Franciscan University of Steubenville for over 25 years. General topics are as follows:

– Mary as revealed in the Sacred Scriptures, taught and explained by the Church Fathers, the Saints, and the Church’s documents
– the proper ways to show childlike love and devotion to the Blessed Mother of Jesus;
– Church’s official teaching on Marian apparitions over the centuries.
It is time for Christians, those who believe and entrust their lives to Jesus Christ, to have a better knowledge, a better love as well as to allow himself/herself to be loved by the Mother of Jesus, who is also his/her Mother as was given to us by Jesus (Jn 19.26).
Thanks to the generosity and the great love Dr. Miravalle has been tirelessly shown to our Blessed Virgin Mother, the theology of Mary as should be properly taught are now available to us.

Mariology for Everyone #2 ( 17min) Play – Mariology for Everyone-Lecture Two: God’s Revealed Will and Mary, part 2

Dr. Miravalle shows how Revelation is supported by three legs, Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium. Regarding the Magisterium, it does not create new revelation but:

  • Interprets revelation
  • Protects against false interpretation
  • Servants of Revelation, subordinate to it.

Then he relates this to Mary and the development of doctrine regarding her, answering the objection, “How can you teach what is not explicit in scripture?”

  • Scripture is not the only source, also Tradition
  • Implicit in scripture, seeds are their
  • Truth about Mary is held in subordination and in reference to Jesus and the Holy Trinity

Mariology for Everyone #4 ( 26min) Play – Dr. Miravalle gives several examples of great women in the Old Testament who are prefigurements of Mary, being like her in some aspect. These include:

– Bathsheba the Queen Mother of King Solomon prefiguring Mary as Queen Mother of Jesus Our King who intercedes with Him.

– Sarah who miraculously gives birth to Isaac, the father of Israel, the people of God.

– Rebecca who clothed the arms of Jacob to be acceptable to God, so Mary does for us.

– Rachael who is mother of Joseph in the Old Testament

– Miriam, sister of Moses and Aaron who Mediates and saves the infant Moses and Mary mediates the one Mediator to us.

– Deborah and Judith who saves the people of God from their opponents.

– Queen Esther who saves the Jews, Mary is Co-redeemer with Jesus.

– Mother of Maccabees – seven of her sons die rather than violate the law of Moses. Dr. Miravalle relates this to the early martyrs of the Church the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady.

Ave Maria Meditations

“The greatest saints, those richest in grace and virtue will be the most assiduous in praying to the most Blessed Virgin, looking up to her as the perfect model to imitate and as a powerful helper to assist them.”

“We never give more honor to Jesus than when we honor his Mother, and we honor her simply and solely to honor him all the more perfectly. We go to her only as a way leading to the goal we seek Jesus, her Son.”

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION:

N. [Name], a faithless sinner-I renew and ratify to-day in thy hands the vows of my Baptism; I renounce for ever Satan, his pomps and works; and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Wisdom, to carry my cross after Him all the days of my life, and to be more faithful to Him than I have ever been before.

In the presence of all the heavenly court I choose thee this day for my Mother and Mistress. I deliver and consecrate to thee as Thy slave, my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the value of all my good actions, past present and future; leaving to you the entire and full right of disposing of me, and of all that belongs to me, without exception, according to Thy good pleasure to the greatest glory of God, in time and in eternity.

Receive O gracious Virgin, this little offering of my slavery, in honor of, and in union with, that subjection which the Eternal Wisdom deigned to have thy Maternity, in homage to the power which both of you have over this little worm and miserable sinner, and in thanksgiving for the privileges with which the Holy Trinity hath favored thee. I protest, that I wish, henceforth, as thy true slave, to seek thy honor, and to obey thee in all things.

O admirable Mother, present me to thy Dear Son, as His eternal slave, so that as He hath redeemed me by thee, by thee He may receive me. O Mother of mercy, get me the grace to obtain the true Wisdom of God, and for that end place me in the number of those whom thou lovest, whom thou teachest, whom thou leadest, and whom thou nourishest and protectest, as thy children and thy slaves. O Faithful Virgin, make me in all things so perfect a disciple, imitator and slave of the Incarnate Wisdom, Jesus Christ thy Son, that I may attain, by thy intercession and by thy example, to the fullness of His age on earth, and of His glory in heaven. Amen.

Ave Maria Meditations

The whole of Mary’s life is permeated with a deep simplicity. She always carries out her vocation as Mother of the Redeemer naturally. She (goes to) her cousin Elizabeth’s house to help and look after her…She prepares the swaddling clothes and everything for her Son.

She lives for 30 years with Jesus, never tiring of looking at Him, treating Him with great love with complete simplicity. When she obtained her first miracle from her Son in Cana she does it so naturally that not even the bride and groom realize what a wonderful event is taking place. She never makes a show of her special privileges. Mary, the most holy mother of God, passes unnoticed as just one more among the women of her town. Learn from her how to live with naturalness.

Our Lady is simplicity and naturalness; her humanity is very specially welcoming and attractive.  Jesus, her Son, during the 30 years of His hidden life is always the model of perfect simplicity. When He began to preach the good news, He does not carry out a noisy spectacular activity. Jesus is simplicity itself in his birth, in the presentation in the temple, or when He manifest His divinity through the miracles which God alone can work. Our Savior shuns all show and vain glory. He makes himself accessible who come to Him trustingly…to the apostles who ask the meaning of the parables and to the little children who embrace Him confidently.

Simplicity is a sign of humility. It is radically opposed to anything false, artificial or deceitful. It is also a very necessary virtue for our dealings with God, for spiritual guidance, and for our daily life with those around us. Simplicity is a consequence and characteristic of the spiritual childhood to which our Lord calls us. Simplicity and naturalness are extremely attractive. We need to know that these are difficult virtues because pride gives us an exaggerated idea of ourselves. However the simplicity our Lord teaches is not naivety. Remember, he said, I am sending you out to be like sheep among wolves: you must then be prudent as serpents and yet innocent as doves.

We Christians have to go through the world with these two virtues, simplicity and prudence, which mutually perfect each other. To be simple we have to be careful to have a right intention in our actions which should be directed to God. To learn how to be simple we contemplate Jesus, Mary and Joseph, asking them to make us like children before God, that we may talk to Him personally without anonymity and without fear .

Ave Maria Meditations

In addition to May 13th being the anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady at Fatima, it is also the Feast of Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Mother of the Holy Eucharist: The Blessed Virgin is called Our Lady of the Most Blessed-Sacrament because she is associated in a special way with the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. She gave us the sacred humanity of Jesus, which is the essence of this sacrament.

As St. Augustine says: “Him whom the heavens cannot contain, the womb of one woman bore. She ruled our Ruler; she carried Him in whom we are; she gave milk to our Bread.”

for Jesus is the blessed fruit of her womb. It was from her that He assumed the flesh and blood with which He nourishes us. When you see Mary in Bethlehem lovingly pressing to her heart her Child, her God, it is the future Eucharistic Christ. When you see Mary offering Him to the heavenly Father in the temple for our salvation, it is the same Jesus you look upon as a Victim for our altars, whom you receive into your soul as your Guest in Holy Communion, whom you adore as your Friend in the Tabernacle. He is all yours because Mary gave her consent to become His Mother.

Though it was out of sheer goodness that God decreed to give us His own Son in the Blessed Sacrament, Mary’s prayers must have had much to do with the carrying out of that plan; for she, too, must have prayed, “Give us this day our daily bread.” And when Jesus instituted this holy Sacrament, He surely thought especially of His Mother.

But the relation between Mary and the Blessed Sacrament can be seen above all in her life after Good Friday when she began her new motherhood at the feet of Jesus in the Eucharist. If to live of the Eucharist and by the Eucharist was the very special spirit of the early Church-“And they continued steadfastly in the … communion of the breaking of the bread” (Acts 2:42)-it must have been the summary of her last years on earth. You can easily picture St. John, the Apostle of love, saying Mass each day in his own home and daily giving Mary the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. There before the tabernacle she relived in memory all the happy and sorrowful events of her life with Jesus. In her heart and life the Eucharist took the place of His former presence in the flesh. Her ardent faith and intense love pierced the veil that separated her from her loving Son. Her heart and His burned with one flame of love to the glory of the Father there at the altar. How happy Jesus must have been to receive the homage that she paid Him. What joy He must have felt at the thought that His Sacramental Presence brought her such consolation.

Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is Mary’s Gift to you. Jesus, not satisfied with having Himself to all mankind in the Incarnation, wished to become united with each of us in a most intimate manner by means of the Holy Eucharist, for by an unceasing act of love He gives Himself to us in each Consecration and in each Communion. Mary’s heart is always conformable to her Son’s will. Having loved her sinful children so much as to sacrifice for them her only Son in His Passion, she loved them to the end by giving them the Holy Eucharist. Every day she renews her gift generously, because to each Sacrifice of her Son she gives her consent; each Consecration is her gift to us. Each Communion is a mystery of her love for us and a grace she obtains and bestows on us. This gift of her heart entitles her to be called the Mother of the Holy Eucharist.
