Fr Bernard gives the homily from Our Lady’s Chapel, New Bedford, MA, for the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome (Nov 09, 2024), explaining the  relationship between the consecrated building and the temple of our soul.

We must offer sacrifices on the altar of our hearts, so as the temple should be resplendent with beauty and sanctity, so should our hearts be clean and brilliant with the light of truth and charity, so that He who dwells therein may be honored as He should. For our hearts to be well ordered to holiness, we should appeal to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, who will help us be worth temples of the divinity.

Ave Maria!

Fr. Bernard M. Salter gives the homily from Our Lady’s Chapel, New Bedford, MA, for Saturday of the Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time (optional memorial of Our Lady on Saturday) on Nov 22, 2024, explaining the sense of today’s Gospel. Marriage is a necessary good in this life, but it is ordered to eternal life in which there will be no marriage. The union of all with God in the beatific vision is anticipated through the eschatological sign of religious life. Chastity is the common aspect of love’s perfection in both states of life.

Fr. Bernard M. Salter gives the homily for the Feast of the Holy Innocents, Martyrs (Dec 28, 2024), showing how man’s heart can be corrupted by disordered self-love, to the point of crushing the lives of others out of envy, jealousy, and pride, as in the case of Herod in today’s commemoration of the martyred children, the Holy Innocents. The same vices that corrupted Herod’s heart are evident today, in the carnage of abortion.

In contrast, the Flight into Egypt offers an opportunity to reflect on the love of Mary, in her obedience to God’s will and her sorrow over the slaughter of those innocents, victims of the hatred for Christ. She continues to grieve over the continuing destruction of life and the incalculabe loss of souls arising form disodered self love that prevails over love of Christ and others so often in the world today.

Fr. Bernard M. Salter gives the homily from Our Lady’s Chapel, New Bedford, MA, for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Jan 26, 2025), on the freedom that flows from fidelity to truth, which leads to a clear perspective on the Gospel.

The good works related in the reading from Isaiah, as fulfilled in Jesus Christ, are primarily spiritual in meaning. The Gospel is not a social manifesto, but a guide to eternal life through Jesus, the author of Life. The Lord came to free us of spiritual blindness and spiritual impoverishment. Relativism is a spiritual affliction that besets mankind today, rejecting the notion of universal Truth. Rampant pride is really spiritual impoverishment.

Mary is the one human creature who reflects perfectly God’s intention for the human condition elevated by Jesus’ redemption. The freedom of Christ means liberation from sin. Our Lady will help us live the good Gospel life that will enable us to receive all the benefits Jesus offers.

Fr. Bernard M. Salter gives the homily from Our Lady’s Chapel, New Bedford, MA, for Saturday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time (Feb 01, 2025), in which he corrects the erroneous conception that. because we put our faith in Jesus Christ, we should expect a life free of suffering, trials, and tribulations. Drawing on the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the example of perfect faith in Christ, Father identifies the truly Christian (Marian!) attitude toward difficulties in our life of serving God, and finds the meaning of such trials the Lord permits us to experience.

Fr. Bernard M. Salter gives the homily from Our Lady’s Chapel, New Bedford, MA, for the Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Mar 02, 2025), on how to apply this Sunday’s scripture to our everyday moral life. In particular, the relation between the faculties of speech and will or related. Further, our will is manifested in our behavior, per our Lord’s teaching about the relation between the quality of the tree and its fruit.

We need to be guided by divine wisdom and not our passions, and then our actions will shine and give glory to God.

Fr. Bernard M. Salter gives the homily from Our Lady’s Chapel, New Bedford, MA, for Saturday after Ash Wednesday (Mar 08, 2025), on the deeper significance of Matthew’s response to Jesus’ invitation.

Matthew had a firm will to pursue God’s will for him. Likewise, we need to willfully respond to God’s call to sanctification. To do so, we must humbly acknowledge our need of healing, and go to the divine physician. Otherwise, we put an obstacle in the way of Christ’s desire to save us.
