Ave Maria!

Hello-Hola-Bonjour-Buon Giorno, etc. Do you believe that the U.S. can have a pro-life victory this year (or sooner) and spread the good news throughout the world, through pro-life media reform? I do. The Friars are working for this, too. How do I connect with them? The Franciscans of the Immaculate offer Holy Mass at our Motherhouse (www.sistersofcharity.com) and, as you can see, we still work together. I teach Spanish at our all girls’ high school (www.ahfbaltic.org); “direct” the drama–we will do the musical Oliver! this fall; and–joy of joys–moderate our pro-life club, which the students named T.O.P.-Life Club. They have posted wonderful highway billboards in Southeastern Connecticut in the pro-life fight and we now host Pro-Life Coffee Houses to help fund the billboards. What shall we discuss in this BLOG?…any of these topics, and more–the reform of the media is my favorite, so that the message of pro-family, pro-life will infiltrate our society and transform it, just as the not-so-beneficial influences have influenced us to date. Mary is the reason we have hope, she is the reason I am a Sister, and she is the way and the answer to media reform. I look forward to hearing from you (or y’all, as some of my favorite people say), and I ask Mary to send you powerful prayers, as I hope for yours. God’s causes cannot fail, and through her intercession, they succeed faster!

Even in the New American version (better in New Jerusalem), do you think that the plaintive cry of the psalmist urges on our pro-life/loving pursuit of truth, efforts? I invite you to read and pray it with me. Do you have a favorite pro-life psalm? Today is the (rather new-Post Vatican II) feast of Our Lady, Mother of the Church–our congregation’s patronal feast day. Let us invoke her for the Church.

Jesus, knit so wonderfully in the womb of Mary,

Jesus, conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary,

Jesus, uniquely human from the moment of conception in the womb of Mary,

Jesus, present at Creation, created in the womb of Mary,

Jesus, through whom the world was made, formed in the womb of Mary,

Jesus, Word made flesh, taking on a human body in the womb of Mary,

Jesus, revealed by the Father, concealed in the womb of Mary,

Jesus, subject to human development in the womb of Mary,

Jesus, whose Precious Blood first flowed through tiny arteries and veins in the womb of Mary,

Jesus, hidden nine months in the womb of Mary,

Let us pray:

Jesus, notwithstanding Your Divine Nature as Son of God, equal and one with the Father, You deigned to become incarnate as the Son of Man, assuming the condition of a pre-born child in the womb of Your Holy Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. You, therefore, sanctified and elevated every maternal womb for all time and every person, whose life is begun at conception.

Jesus, manifest yourself in the hearts of Your people as the Eternal Son of God, whose earthly life began in the womb of a woman called Mary. You could have chosen to commence Your Messianic mission in another manner; however, You showed Your love for us by becoming a pre-born infant in the womb of Your Holy Mother. You took on the total human existence from conception to death. You consented to be carried in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary and then, after birth, saved us by Your suffering and death on the cross. From conception to death we live and have our being in You.

Jesus, we adore and thank You for choosing to become incarnate in the womb of Your mother, Mary. We beseech You to bless all mothers and intercede with the Holy Spirit and Your Father, that every infant in the womb receive Your precious gift of life.

Jesus, conceived in the womb of Mary, grant that Mary’s loving mantle overshadow these precious pre-born infants in the wombs of their mothers and assist in their birth. We ask this, Jesus, in Your name, who with the Father and Holy Spirit, lives and reigns forever. Amen.

The infant Christ is the whole Christ. Christ was not more God, more Christ, more man, on the Cross than He was in His Mother’s womb. His first tear, His first smile, His first breath, His first pulsation in the womb of His Mother, could have redeemed the world, in fact, Christ chose the life of growth and work and suffering, and the death on the Cross which we know; but by His own choice all this was to depend on a human being giving herself to Him in His infancy, giving her own humanity to the actual making of that infant’s humanity and giving Him her life in which to rest.If every person in whom Christ lives at all, in whom He is an infant – which means anyone whose soul is alive at all- surrendered themselves to Him, resting in Him so that He might rest in them, in each one of them the world’s redemption would begin as it began in Mary, the Mother of God. Christ is formed in us, and we are formed into Christ, when we rest in Him and He rests in us.

During Advent Christ rested in Mary – still, silent, helpless, and utterly dependent. The Creator trusted Himself to His creature. He trusted to her the expression of His love, the expression of God’s love for the world and of His love of His Father, just as the work of His love would be trusted to us, in His life in us.

He was dumb; her voice was His voice.

He was still; her footsteps were His journeys.

He was blind; her eyes were His seeing.

His hands were folded; her hands did the work of His hands.

His life was her life; His heartbeat was the beating of her heart.

This was a foreshadowing of what the incarnation would mean for us; for in us, too, Christ rests as He rested in Mary. From the moment when the Christ-life is conceived in us, our life is intended for one thing, the expression of His love, His love for God and for the world. Our words are to be the words that He wants to speak; we must go to wherever He wants to go, we must see and look at whatever He wants to see and look at; the work that our hands do must be the work that His hands want to do, our life must be the living of His life, our loves the loving of His heart. But there is the other aspect of Christ’s Advent. While He remained hidden in Mary, His rest was a tremendous activity; He was making her into Himself, making Himself from her. From her eyes He was making the eyes that would weep over Jerusalem, that would shine upon the wild flowers, that would dose in death and open on the morning of Resurrection.

From her hands He was making the hands that would heal and raise the dead and be nailed to the Cross. From her heart He was making the heart whose love would redeem the world. The same thing occurs when, allowing the infant Christ to rest in us, we wait patiently on His own timing of His growth in us, and give Him just what He asks, the extremely simple things that are ourselves – our hands and feet, our eyes and ears, our words, our thoughts, our love. Not only does He grow in us, but we are formed into Him.

HAIL MARY, beloved Daughter of the eternal Father. Hail Mary, wonderful Mother of the Son. Hail Mary, faithful Spouse of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, my dear Mother, my loving Lady, my powerful Queen. You are all mine through your mercy, and I am all yours.

Take away from me all that may be displeasing to God. Cultivate in me everything that is pleasing to you. May the light of your faith dispel the darkness of my mind, your deep humility take the place of my pride; your continual sight of God fill my memory with his presence; the fire of the charity of your heart inflame the lukewarmness of my own heart; your virtues take the place of my sins; your merits be my enrichment and make up for all that is wanting in me before God.
