This vignette of the apparition of Our Lady to St. Catherine Laboure on the occasion of her request for the Medal was produced by the Franciscans of the Immaculate in conjunction with Susan Mackewich of Gizmo Productions and Dave Wroe. We include this segment on the happy occasion of the start of Air Maria and on the Feast of the Annunciation of the Archangel St. Michael to Our Lady resulting in the blessed Incarnation of the Son of God.

The AirMaria Crew (minus our Roving Reporter, friar Roderic) recently went to Cleveland, Ohio, for the Catholic Marketing Network’s Trade Show.

Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J. was the principal celebrant for the Holy Mass on Thursday morning, and afterwards we caught up with him, to do a series of several parts, on the recent documents released by Pope Benedict XVI. Fr. Fessio is a close friend of the Holy Father and in this short series he explains these documents with insights from this unique perspective.

This first episode is an explanation of the very recent Apostolic Letter “Motu Proprio”? Summorum Pontificum which our Holy Father, Pope Benedict released on 07/07/07 concerning the use of the Roman Missal promulgated by John XXIII in 1962.

We are very blessed to have Fr. Fessio agree to do this series for AirMaria and we hope you will not only enjoy it, but will gain a higher appreciation for how our Holy Father is guiding his flock with wisdom and prudence.

In this segment of our mini series on Recent Vatican Documents Fr. Fessio discusses the Cover Letter to the “Motu Proprio” Summorum Pontificum. In this letter pope Benedict XVI addresses confusing and speculative reports in the media prior to the release of the Motu Proprio and strong reaction to these reports both positive and negative. The pope says the two fears that sparked most of the opposition are that allowing the old rite would:

1. be a detraction from the authority of the Second Vatican Council and its liturgical reform, and

2. lead to disarray and division in parish communities.

Come listen to Fr. Fessio as he covers the thoughts of the Holy Father in regard to these fears based on the Cover Letter but also based on his own familiarity with the pope’s position on the liturgy. In the process he covers the true nature of the reform of Vatican II, the bad interpretations of that reform (and resulting damage) and where the Holy Father wants the reform of the reform to go in relation to the old liturgy. Fr. Fessio also adds many of his own insights.

Fr. Fessio referring to Cardinal Ratzinger’s book The Spirit of the Liturgy and to Moses in the Old Testament and the purpose of the Exodus outlines the fullest possible context to and significance of the Motu Proprio. He says the most important element for the liturgy is reverence and the understanding that its form comes from heaven. Without this the liturgy becomes merely human, then humanistic and finally anti-human, something that imprisons rather than frees.

Fr. Fessio covers the importance for celebrating the mass Ad Orientum and the fallacious reasons put forth for abandoning it. The Motu Proprio is then an opportunity for people to celebrate the mass facing east and so should be an important vehicle for healing rifts and for reform within the Church.

Fr. Fessio ends this video by stating that the Motu Proprio:

“may be as significant for the first half of the 21st Century as Humanae Vitae was for the second half of the 20th Century”

This second to last part of our series by Fr. Joseph Fessio, S.J., on recent Vatican documents covers the document issued July 9th, two days after the Motu Proprio, by the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith entitled “Responses to some Questions Regarding Certain Aspects of the Document on the Church” i.e. Lumen Gentium

This document was issued by the Congregation to clarify some points of confusion since the close of the Second Vatican Council.

Questions addressed in this talk are:

• Did the Second Vatican Council change the Catholic Doctrine on the Church?”
• What is the meaning of the word ‘subsists’ in the statement the “Church … subsists in the Catholic Church” LG 8
• Why the word subsist was used instead of ‘is’.
• Why does the council use the word ‘churches’ for the separated Eastern Orthodox?
• Why does the Council not use the word Church for the Protestant communities?

In answer to the first question Fr. Fessio quotes Pope Paul VI, who after the Council says, “What Christ willed, we also will. What was, still is. What the Church has taught down the centuries, we also teach.”

Referring to a Washington Post article from the Religious News Service called Papal Mystery: Is Benedict Downplaying Vatican II by Decrees? which Fr. Fessio finds is the best summary of the objections to the Motu Proprio as expressed by two Catholic priests:

1. Rev. James F. Puglisi from the Center for Union in Rome who says:

… the Good Friday liturgy in the Tridentine Missal contains a prayer for the conversion of the Jews that refers to their “blindness” and the “veil [on] their hearts.”

and thus undoing the more conciliatory phrasing of the new liturgy and so undoing Vatican II

But Fr. Fessio says that the reference to the Jews is in the Gospel not just the Council of Trent and it also in the Vatican II documents but expressed in different terms. And to want to convert someone to your religion is to love that person.

2. Rev. William Henn from Pontifical Gregorian University says that stressing an interpretation in Continuity with past Councils would be to say there is nothing new in Vatican II.

To this Fr. Fessio responds, Vatican II is in continuity with past councils but is new in that it clarifies things in the light of current concerns.

He further clarifies the recent document on ecumenism by quoting the Vatican document Unitatis Redintegratio that shows that what the Congregation of the Doctrine and Faith wrote under the direction of Pope Benedict is in full agreement with Vatican II and he is just dispelling confusion and misinformation regarding the Council.

Fr. Peter Fehlner speaks at Steubenville University in 2007, at the invitation of Dr. Scott Hahn. The talk is on his book St. Maximilian Kolbe: Martyr of Charity – Pneumatolgist where he outlines the teaching of St. Maximilian on the the Holy Spirit and His relation to the Immaculate Conception. He covers St. Maximilian’s methodology, his teaching on the Holy Spirit, how it can resolve, revive and update theology on a sound basis and some of the objections raised against this Saint. He gives a brief discussion on the three titles of Mary, Complement of the Trinity, Spouse of the Holy Spirit and the Immaculate Conception, and how these titles apply to the Holy Spirit and Our Lady. Here is the second presentation given at our Coredemption Conference in Indiana on Saturday 13th October, 2007, by yet another EWTN celebrity, Fr. Pablo Straub. He admitted afterwards to running out of time and having to shorten his talk – what a tragedy! Maybe we will see the lost parts in the book when it goes to print.

Video – Bp. Raymond Burke – Fatima, Call to Cooperate with Mary – Greenwood 2007 – CONF 3

In this week’s installment of the video from our Marian Coredemption Conference, Behold Your Mother we have the homily of Archbishop Raymond Burke who was the main celebrant for Mass. He bases his homily on the apparitions at Fatima (the day of the conference, Oct 13th, was the 90th anniversary of the apparitions) giving him the opportunity to talk about the intercession of Mary in cooperation with Christ. Thank you Archbishop Burke.
