Dear Derek,

Yes, he must be a canonized a saint before he can be made a Doctor of the Church. And so the title of ‘Doctor’ is only a popular name. Basically all the major theological scholors in the Scholastic Age were given such a title by popular acclaim without any suggestion that were declaired so by the Pope. Thanks for the comment.

Fra Roderic Mary

P.S. Fr. Agnellus says he will explain this to you fully when you get to Durham for the Symposium.

John Duns Scotus was known as ‘Doctor Subtilis’, Subtle Doctor. Could you tell me if this holy Blessed is on the list of the Doctors of the Church. I looked up the list of the 33 Doctors of the Church (Tan Books) and could not find his name there. Perhaps he has to be a canonised saint first? I hope you can help me with this question. Thanking you in advance,
